Ok, i'm torn between what i really want. I want a quick, peppy, 2wd Dak. BUT, do I go for an r/t and kick a$$ out of the box, or do I go for a 4.7 or 318 w/ a 5-speed and put some money into them to get them alive. OPINIONS WELCOME! P.S. i want to give my friends '94 z28 a run for it's money... :) Thanks!

if your not going to haul or tow anything heavy. then get the R/T. I doubt either engines will give the Z-28 a run for its money with out some serious mods. is your friends Z a LS-1 Engine?

MY OPINION would be to get a 4.7 with the NV3500 5-spd. Many of these are, stock for stock, beating or haing VERY close to R/T's.

Drop some coin on 206 or 212 cams from KRC, intake, exhaust and a SuperChips or better ECM flash and you'll be screaming...

Benefit of the 4.7 is lighter weight, newer technology, better fuel mileage (given that you keep your foot out of it :). Plus, if you have R/T badges, people EXPECT fast...

i'd say 4.7 or 5.2 5 speed.. both have proven to be quicker (not faster) in the 1/4... and newer technology is not always a good thing when trying to modify a vehicle lol

OTHER than the 3 piece timing chain set. The 4.7 is EASIER to work on AND more high tech than the 318/360.

Lots of O-Ringed parts vs. scraping paper or cork gaskets as well! The two cams take a fraction of the time to swap vs the single cam in the old ones as well. And you don't need to drain the water or replace ANY gaskets to do so.

My experience so far. Flame suit is now on!

i guess it's easier for yall to change spark plug wires hahaha!!


.. something as simple as changing the oil is a bigger pain with the 4.7. No fancy doors to open on a 5.9 or 5.2 to get to the oil filter. it's just right there.

flushing the cooling system is easier on the 5.2-5.9, changing the thermostat, replacing the water pump, replacing the timing chain, changing the camshaft (hey, we only have to do one).. etc etc.

4.7 technology has led to there being no aftermarket computers to run those motors... is that a good technology??

Lets see. Other than the 3 chains, YES I think removing the overhead cam is easy. And then the ROLLER rockers just lift out from under it. How long does it take to yank out the 16 rockers in the valley of a 318 especially if it's got 100k + miles on it varnished in there???

The t-stat is MANY times easier. I could change out 3 t-stats in the time it takes to change one on a 318 or similar. I've done it to test t-stats. Even tho it is on the bottom, you DON'T loose much coolant taking it apart. And NO GASKET. Just a seal you pop off one t-stat and slap on the other t-stat. Two 8MM headed bolts are all that holds that together. You don't remove a single hose to change the t-stat on a 4.7! It's a 5 minute job as long as you pop off the plastic sheid first. Which is pretty easy to pop off by removing the snap in clips. I've done it several times.

The oil filter IS up front. BUT. Once you learn the best way to get it off, it isn't hard byany means. You just can't DROP it or it spills on that plastic sheild.

Speaking of, I need to change my oil on my Dak. And Filter too. Got my Amsoil filter and oils in my Garage sitting there and I'm slacking :)

Maybe I'll take pix of my oil change he he. Maybe it will be messy, maybe it wont?

As for working on things. I've had my 318's and 360's. There are several things on this new motor I found to be a sigh of releif. And yeah. NO spark plug wires to change. Ever.

so you have to "learn" a best way to change the oil on a 4.7 ??? with a 5.2-5.9, you just twist the filter in a counter-clockwise motion lolol!!

not a big learning process..

LOL yeah have your fun.

Today I changed the oil. And I made a mess doing the front filter since I had no patience.

The best way is to cut the bottom off of a 2 liter bottle and you can stick it up thru that hole and twist off the filter and let it drop right in there. Now there is where the patience comes in. You have to hold that bottle there for a minutes or so until the oil stops running out or it will run down on the cross member.
So yes, it's something to LEARN.

Other than that it's easy.
I've done WORSE where the oil filter is above the exhaust pipe!

Oh and on the 4.7, you DON'T need a funnel to add oil. Even using a 1 gallon bottle like I do. The filler spout is UP FRONT and big enough to just pour the oil in :)



When I had that 4.7 I bought in Prescott in the back of my truck. Every stop I made on the way home I got asked WHAT that engine was for.
It is different. And that's what my 1974 Duster will be when it's at the track. People will be like "Holy S**t"!

see... in my 2000 Durango Owner's manual, it specifically states that you do not need a 2 liter coke bottle to change your oil on the 5.2 and 5.9 liters.

But, on the last page, there's a coupon for 4.7 liter owners.

$.35 off your next 2 liter purchase

I use a two litre bottle to change my oil also like Graph. The top half is to dump the oil into my 5 gallon gas can.

I love my 4.7, but man do those cammed up 360's and 318's sound nasty, especially at idle.

Nothing flows like a straight pipe

best oil filter changes gotta be the big blocks and the 2.2/2.5 liters. You can change the filter from under the hood without getting under the vehicle.

Real easy to change the filter through the front wheel well on the 4.7 too; I rotate my tires while I'm at it. No bottle required.

HAHA...I have also found that basic engines like the 318 are higher performance than some of the more sophistocated engines. All I have to do to change the thermostat is get a ratchet and the right socket and an extension and take off two bolts on the intake manifold, pop the aluminum tube off, pull the thermostat out, clean replace gasket and throw it back on and bolt the 2 bolts down :) enough said. I think the 4.7 is a great engine though.

go for the 5.9. throw some eddy aluminum heads on there and u will have a bigger more powerful engine than a 4.7 but it will weigh about the same. 5.9's have lots more parts available and are the motors under the hoods of the fastest dakotas in the country.
