I have a 2001, 4.7 with 50k on it that has been starting slowly. When I say slowly, I mean it has to crank over two to three times longer than normal to start. The battery is fine and it cranks over just as fast as ever. I changed the plugs and the problem still exists. There are no trouble codes or check engine light.
The problem is more noticable when the enging is cold. Is there a sensor I should change out?
Everytime this happened with my old 3.9 dakota, the fuel pump would have to be replaced.

I would say fuel pump.... or maybe a leaky injector. Replaced pump on mine and problem gone.

Try turning the ignition on and letting the pump run before cranking it over. The pump will run for a few seconds then turn off till you start it.
If that helps, it would seem that the pressure is bleeding out of the system.

I am having the same problem with my 4.7 and have determined that the problem is the fuel pressure regulator/filter mounted on the top of the fuel pump. It is supposed to keep the fuel line pressurized, but mine drops from 50psi to 20 in 5 seconds after turning it off, then to 0 within another minute.

This is a common problem and most of the time, you don't need to replace parts.
It's caused by the fuel pump check valve sticking and letting the fuel pressure bleed off, back into your tank when you shut off your engine.
If you turn the key to 'on', wait a few seconds and turn the key to 'off' and back on again, the fuel pump will come on and start pressurizing the system again (for a few seconds). So, if your fuel injected engine is cranking too long before it starts, just cycle the fuel pump on a few times like I described above, then try to start your engine. If it starts up without the long cranking, it's a fuel pressure bleed off problem (most likely).
The gasoline you buy isn't pure gasoline, it contains contaminates that are small enough to get past your fuel filter. These 'dirt'particles start sticking to your fuel system components and the smaller moving parts get effected first. I like to buy a bottle of STP fuel injector cleaner in the black bottle and Marvel Mystery Oil. Pour half of the STP in at the next fill up and about 8 oz of the MMO along with it. Do this before you pump the fuel into the tank. Then at the next fill up pour the other half of the STP and another 8 oz of MMO. This 2 tank "treatment" process should clean and lubricate your fuel system enough to unstick the fuel pump check valve. The treatment is usually good for several months. You might also look for another place to buy gas from (if you buy from the same place all the time) since you might be going to a station with above average amounts of dirt in the fuel storage tanks. I haven't driven the truck since I started this post. I will be driving it tonight and I will try the "wait a few second trick".
