Subject: Can't peel out
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a '94 Dak with the 5.2, and I can barely spin the tires, my truck seems really doggy off the line. I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and what I can do to fix it. I have tried high octane fuel, I cleaned out the converter, gapped the plugs to .040, installed a K&N, put a Thrush exhaust on it, and it still sucks off the line. Any help would really be appreciated! Thanks!

Looks like your overlooking the importance of a good tune-up. Your valves may need adjusting, your timing may be off, maybe a chip could help you out a little bit. Can you devise a cold air induction? Maybe your gearing may be set for HWY.

Just a few thoughts.

I agree with darquenio, your truck is in need of a tune up seeing as it's 11 years old. Basic stuff, cap, rotor, plugs, wires, clean throttle body (port + polish it if feeling adventerous), air filter and other things of that nature. After that, then look into adding performance parts to it.

Do you know what gearing is in your truck and whether you have an LSD rear? A 3.21 or 3.55 LSD rear end with good tires shouldn't do more than screech the tires from a dead stop in stock form.

Also, don't waste your money on high octane gas if lower octane wont cause detonation. There is no performance advantage to it unless you're running boost or have high compression.

My old 95 318 lost a little bottom end once. Started checking stuff and found one side of my intake manifold gasket was split. It let cyl #1 pull oil vapors in, and gummed the rings lowering compression.
If your tune up is new(also drop the plug gap back to .035)then its time to pull a compression check. My 95 had 165 psi not shure if 94 is the same though.
Also like everyone else has said, higher octane gas is not going to give you "more power" it is meant for controlling detonation in high compression engines

Need4Speed -
Do you have an automatic tranny?
I have a 93 318 CC 2WD Auto Limited Slip and 4.10 rear - no spare tire and no tailgate. I also have a good set of Michlins on stock rims 235/70/15's. I have trouble getting the wheels to spin. You can hear the tires start to spin in the higher RPMs but then it wants to shift.

Ok, well first off the truck has a FRESH tune-up this year... New plugs, cap, rotor, wires, K&N air filter, and cleaned the throttle body (also changed the tranny fluid and filter for good measure). I do not have a limited slip diff (although when it does peel it has a tendency to break both tires loose), it is 3.55 gears, and a good set of Goodyear Wranglers, no tailgate. Maybe its just not in that year truck to burn out well.... I dont know. It is frustrating though, because a 318 2wd truck should be able to burn 'em pretty easily, I would think? I've read some about adjusting the TPS to a higher base voltage, maybe that would help? The truck has plenty of power at higher RPM, like if I mash it at about 15 mph it is like a rocket when it drops down to 1st, but off the line just isnt very impressive. Thanks for the info, and any more ideas would be really appreciated!

well, then power brake it...

look, a burn out is cool, but that means you have NO traction, meaning that power is lost to wheel slip. I have a modified 01 R/T, ported and polished intake and heads, FIPK, no cats, tuned ignition, and tons of other sh*t... IF I'm LUCKY, and jump on the gas hard enough, I can get a slight squeel out of the rear tires (LSD.. both spin) using Yokohama ATS 275/55R17's... ALL the power, roughly 325 HP is planted to the road in forward acceleration.

If it's dogging, then I'd say open the intake up more. BUILD for more torque, if your goal is to get moving faster. Torque is what starts you moving, HP is what gets you down the road...
go for a FIPK, and change out to the 180 Thermostat... you said you just did a tranny fluid swap... stick with Mopar atf +4, others have a tendancy to cause trany slip, which could be the issue.. another thing to think about adding in is a trany fluid cooler. all AT's have one, running in the radiator, but adding an auxiliary one isn't hard, and cools the tranny fluid (and tranny) another 10 degrees colder...

HEHEHEH... or you could just pour some bleach on the tires.. that'll produce a SH*T load of smoke!

Get 4:1 or 3:92 gears ,you seem to have another problem ,maybe you have an exhaust leak, you can try modifying the tps sensor to see what it does, check www. V8performance.com they show you how to do it. good luck

I got a 2000 dak 3.9L, a few mods, even without slipping the clutch it still leaves a 10ft black mark, but if i do slip the clutch it's been up to 70ft of black mark with brand new tires. Having a 5 speed gives a large advantage of slipping tires

Thanks for the info guys.... I have been racking my brain trying to figure out this problem. I tried gapping out the plugs, but I get spark knock unless I run 93 octane, so I thought the better coil might solve this problem (should be here tomorrow). Dont get me wrong, the truck WILL peel out, but it still seems kinda slow off the line, and the throttle response is lacking while driving. I might try the TPS Mod, I also have the Mopar performance PCM coming tomorrow, see if that wakes 'er up any! Thanks again for the info, and any more would be appreciated!

badass, what elivation are you at, etc???

If you're around 5,000 ft alt, then that would explain it right there.

I am approx 1,000 ft in Phoenix area. It will burn em almost through the intersection with 255 65 16's running in 2WD of course.

It don't spin in 4WD unless it's wet or something. Then it's still tough to spin.

well, burning out really isnt what most are trying for but if you want to lay down some killer ones you can increase your tire pressure.
I have a 2000 r/t ex cab and im running mich. pilots on it, if I run 45 psi I can burn them right though second gear, but if I lower pressure to about 20 psi I can really hook up good. I have alot of engine mods and I almost have the NOS installed should be right around 440 HP.
