The 4.7 is such a great engine I had to post this. Its a responsive torquey motor, I love it. For a mid sized Pickup the Dakota is a kick a$$ setup and for the money you cant beat it!! Friggin Chevy's cost a fortune in this class..unless you want a stupid little S10..or whats that one they make the eXtreme or something...yeah, nice payload on that, put a can of pop in the bed and your bumper is kissing the ground. oh yeah and Ford...or is it a Mazda...or is it a Mazda with a Ford engine..or is it a .. ahhh, who even cares...its a POS.

I wouldnt knock the ranger. I had one and only had one prob with that truck. had it 9 years and preformed wonderfully. I wish I could of kept that truck as my daily driver. granted the truck sucked in the snow lol. but far as maint on the vehicle I never spent a dime on it. I dont know about the newer rangers but my 95 been in less times to the shop than my 03 dak and had that 1.5 years lol.

I also had a 94 merc cougar and 89 mustang. and had no prob with the cougar and the only prob I had on the mustang was the computer was throwing codes that it wasnt even programed for. fords head office wanted that computer really quick and lucky for me. the other owner got the extended warranty so it cost me nothing. so I cant knock ford on anything but the price of their vehicles. I would buy a ford over a chevy anyday ;-)

The only "rock" motor i know of is the 318. Sorry man theres no other block that will take the abuse quite like the good ol' 318.

The best derby motor will always be the 318. Theres no other motor that will handle the heat as good as it will. With that said, A 318 will run just as good when hot. Try that with a chevy 350 and it would be overheated.

I build all my derby cars with Chrysler 318's. Most commonly the wedge "wideblock" 318 is the one that is used. When you got nearly half the field running 318's its kinda obvious just how good of motor it can be.

If you cant Dodge it....RAM it.

They all came from one place - the 331 Chrysler hemi. The "Plymouth" poly motors (277-303-313-318-326) were derived from it, wedge (273-318-340-360) motors from the poly, and now the "newly designed 4.7L OHC V8" which looks suspiciously like a modern version of the wide block 318. For some strange reason, they never took the opportunity to surround each cylinder with 5 head bolts instead of 4 when they built the 4.7. That is the achilles heel of all of these motors - poor sealing under pressure. It was the downfall of the early hemi.

The dakotas are in a class of there own. You cant really compare a little s-10 or a ranger to a dakota. My brother has a ranger and its a nice get around town car but their is no way in hell id ever try to pull my boat to the docks with it. I also used to own an S-10 but it got smashed. (stupid chick swereved into oncoming traffic) anyway it was a bad accident and i got messed up so i decided to get something bigger and safer aka my Dak. Its bigger, faster, and can sure tow ALOT more for a comparable price.
I just love how ford says that the rangers can carry a bigger payload than dakotas Its even funnier that they wont even list the maximum tow capacity.

Speaking of the WIDE block, I saw one ONCE. In a 1960-something Dodge truck. the auto tranny shifter was in the middle of the dash like a motor home!

Anyway. I was working in a shop back then. The guy had us (me) install a 440 with 727 into that thing.

Can you imagine how HARD it was finding exhaust manifolds to line up and around that old beasts steering components, etc???

Anyway. I got it in there. WHEW it was a biatch! That was about 10 years ago.

why do 4.7's rock? i dont think they are better than 5.2's. im not knocking the thing, but building the 4.7 didnt really get any serious advantages. more parts to break i think. the milage is the same. and it has 5 more hp. comon. re-design a whole new motor to replace a legend for 5 god damn hp?!? torgue is the same! at the same rpm! not worth it to me. someone will whine about... blah blah the H.O. 4.7 does this and the H.O. does that. drop a nice intake and cam in the 318 and i bet it will have some sweet numbers as well, probably better.
like i said im not trying to put it down. but the 4.7 does not "rock".

Nothing is as good as my old 318. Its been on the road for 155 thousand miles and it still runs great except for using a little oil. I bet nobody with a 4.7 can say that. I understand that they had to build a new design of an engine to meet emissions, but the old design was bulletproof. I will admit that they are making more power with less cubic inches and that it does get better fuel mileage even though the trucks they put them in are heavier than mine. I guess I'm just old school and don't like new things that I don't understand or can't work on. 318s rule.

STOP right there....you said it.

Thats the greatest thing about the older motors 3.9/5.2/5.9 They are VERY reliable. If maintained well the motor itself is capable of 200k -250k, that is if the tranny holds up. Like the slant six, the 3.9/5.2 has shown itself quite capable of great abuse and longevity.

I just got home a bit ago from towing this future DRAG CAR from Payson to Scottsdale. Some of them hills have LONG inclines. Back in the 80's, 4 banger cars could only do 50MPH up them hills.

Today my 4.7 QC 4X4 pulled that car and them parts in the bed up them hills doing 50MPH part throttle using the cruise control and A/C.

The ONLY reason I did 50 was because we were worried them wheels would fly off that trailer if we went any faster!
We did 50 on the flat too :(

The truck felt like I could have done 70.
Once we were within miles form home I got it up to 55 to 60. Still no sweat running in OD.
It pulled most hills grunting under 3K and on the flat running 1400 RPM's in OD just fine!
On some STEEP hills it grabbed 2nd prime hear and there.

Oh yeah. I'm most likely looking at running a juiced up 318 that comes with this car. Got to find either a 727 or a 5 speed manual for it.
I'll be fabricating everything myself.

4.7's rock. 318's STILL rock.

WHo gives a sh*t what is REALLY better it's an opinion obviously biased on whatever you guys have.
I was happy with every 318 I've driven. I'm happy with the 4.7 my Dakota came with.

Love those old Duster/Demons. Pretty light to begin with, put them on a diet and they trim down real quick.
Whats it got? 318 w/904? The 904s aren't bad little tranys. Get that duster lean enough and it would probably work fine.
Hope you have alot of fun with your new toy, I know you're going to have alot of work with it. ;)

I had a '92 5.2 RC 3:55 auto that made it to 217K on the original engine/trans/rear and got 17.5 overall mpg. My current '01 4.7 RC 3:92 5-spd manual has 120K to date, and gets 18.5 to 20 mpg. Both MOPAR, both super; period. I chose my current Dak over a 5.9 R/T for the mpg difference; today's gas prices back up my decision.

Idano, it has NO engine and NO tranny :p

I've got a 318 for it but it didn't come from that car. Someone else stripped it down to nothing but the suspension and never finished it.

My friends other car cooked every 904 he ran. We swapped in a 727 and it was fine for years and now it is worn but it does sit for a long time too.

I could do a 904 if I build it up a bit. While my friend drove his at 120+ here and there and all over up the mountains around Payson, AZ. This car will be locally driven to the store here and there and down the track.

I may think about findning a junk yrad 5 speed manual if anyone knows a 5 speed that will work on a older LA 318 as far as balancing goes, etc.

The Duster my friend drives weighs 3100. He added some weight to, rather than removing i.e. a sway bar, circle track torsion bars, etc.

I will most likely just be running the two seats and the rest closed up with sheet metal and plexiglass, etc.

Got some plans for this car. But it may be a while unless I can trim down on some of my monthly bills :(

First thing is to get the space back in my garage.

That's what is occupying the space for the Duster. Right now the Duster is at my friends house in Scottsdale until I can find a box trailer and store these ATV's in the storage yard or something.

My yard is too small to get a trailer to the back yard. And we don't have big yards either!

Looks like its time to sell the bikes Graphite :) Then when you get the 318 built up go with the 727, that 318 will eat up the 904's.

id have to find it but i had an old copy of mopar muscle that had a an article on old dodges and a company that was making 5 speeds to swap into them. i think they were rated at over 800 hp and would fit in with older motors. BUT i think they were for B bodies and isnt that car an A body?

Sounds like you're thinking of Keisler. They do make a kit to fit the A bodies too now but you won't find one in a junk yard - they aren't cheap. The 904 can be built to last, and pass more power through than the 727. Definitely not as beefy in stock form.
