Subject: Check Engine No OD or 1st gear
IP: Logged

Message:
Driving just yesterday I had to hit my brakes abruptly and right afterward the check engine light came on and the truck was sluggish, I have no Overdrive or 1st gear now..I have been reading about the computer putting the trans into "limp home mode" that seems to be what its doing. The check engine code is P0743 Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Electrical . Now, I am very mechanically inclined so I'd like to fix it myself. Does anybody have a way of telling me what to look for and how to fix this issue? Thanks in advance!!!

yellowrt2nv,
i've seen that before, from what i have heard it is caused either by a bad connection of the sensors on the transmission, or people replaced their torque converter module and solenoid, also some have just reset their pcm and never came back, maybe to save time and money try resetting you pcm, though not sure how? try doing a search.

I am currently having that same problem with my 99 r/t but came up with codes P0753 and P1765. Both electrical. Look at your voltmeter and see if it too is reading low. My problem is because the voltage regulator in the PCM is bad,and the downside is the PCM is on national backorder. You could have another problem causing that problem. Dont just reset the PCM thinking it will go away.

you will NEVER have overdrive in first gear. Overdrive is actually a fourth gear in your automatic transmission that engages at speeds over 42 mph when cruising or just light excelleration. The deffinition of overdrive is a gear ratio in the transmission that drives the driveshaft at a higher rpm then is input into the transmission, thus "overdiving" the transmission. Depending on the transmission, you could, in some cases, have several overdrive gears.

Personnally, the 1st thing I would do is try to clear the code. You can do that by disconnecting the battery for 20 seconds and turn on the ignition like you are trying to start it during that time. That will clear the computer of all data it has acquired, including what it has learned about how you drive it. If it's a true code and problem, it should reappear. It is possible that the computer has caused the loss of your gears. Let us know if you try it and if it works.

Disconnecting the battery DOES NOT CLEAR THE CODES!!! It doesnt get rid of the check engine light. you have to have a scan tool or have the dealer clear the codes. This is not a ford or a chevy, where you can disconnect the battery and clear the memory.

Have a technician look over your truck and tell you the true problem before you go and clear anything out of the memory. You could clear it out and it could come right back or it might be gone, is that a risk worth taking. do it right the first time.

T. Lehfeld, Sorry but you've been misinformed. I've cleared my CEL several times, mostly because I comes up as error on the machines. That is also the way I cleared it when I changed my Speed Sensor. You need to consult your book before passing on bogus info.

Go ahead and clear any codes. As long as the truck is running the codes will return if there really is a problem. You don't need some idiot dealer tech to hook up a scanner and stick you with $200-300 service charge just to tell you what you already know.

You can go to AutoZone, have them scan the codes, write them down and then reset the computer. It's free.

Good advise, sorry, I forgot about that. Advance auto and many others will do the same thing. I took my truck to a dealer when it was still under warrentee and after I had consulted this forum about a problem with the Throttle Positioning Sensor, the dealer said there was nothing wrong with it. i replaced it and the problem whent away.

I checked with autozone, they gave me the same code as flashed on my odometer readout the P0743 code. I disconnected the bat and did the ignition, reconnected and restarted, the check engine came right back on in a few seconds leading me to believe its not somthing that can just be reset. I also hooked up a obd scanner and tried to reset it that way, It diddent respond. I even disco' the computer under the hood. Still nothing. Its most likely a definite problem with some part. I just dont know wich yet.

yellowrt2nv, what happens when you manually put it in first? Does it still start out in second?

Yes, When you put it in first it goes into either second or third. I havent been with my truck all week, im in fla to double check but im pretty sure it starts out in 2nd not first if its in 1st.
The fluid is full. I changed it at 55,000 along with the filter with the correct mopar fluid. it now has a little over 63,000

Code P1757 is: governor pressure is above 3 psi when 0 psi is requested. That is from my scan tool book,so that give you a start.
While i am here the comment about pulling the battery cable to clear codes, i still say do not. My repair manuals and the Dodge dealer i take my truck in for service agree.

Before I got my programmer/Scanner tool a.k.a. SuperChips.
I've had a few codes. Forgeting to plug something back in, O2 wires melting to my exhaust, etc.
I'd fix the problem and do the battery trick. Worked every time. Only thing that sucks is the computer learns (and tunes) from scratch again so it may take a few days to perform it's best again. The scanner tool just clears the codes i believe.

But the battery truck DOES work if you have to scanner tool.

I found this works, Disconnect the negative terminal on the truck for 12 seconds. I found that it clears the check engine light, but your Trip Odometer does not reset. That leads me to think that it doesn't clear the whole computer.
