ok I phoned a local place and the compcams one is $390 new valve springs $120 new pushrods $120. If i ordered it from compcams directly it would have been a lot more b/c of the exchange rate and shipping.

I swapped mine over too a carb. The only gauges that don't work are my tach and fuel. The fuel because I now have a fuel cell and the tach because I run a aftermarket ignition.

Well here's the deal. The stock ignition will not fire unless everything is hooked up. I have a MSD distributor and a Jacobs ignition system. The fuel system has too be modified with a regulator and a hot wire ran too the pump. Then, you must add a voltage regulator so the alt will charge. That's pretty much all it will take to get it to run. My truck is not a daily driver, I did this swap to get the most power at the cheapest price.

Zac, in the Mopar small block book I mentioned, they cover how to bypass the Auto Shutdown Relay while adding the Mopar Performance Ignition. It's Mopar's electronic ignition kit used by thousands of Mopar owners to either bypass computer controls or upgrade older point-style ignitions in 60's musclecars. It consists of their proven electronic distributor (used since the early 70's), a ballast resistor, all wiring, ignition ECU, and also the paperwork on bypassing the ASD. It's basically just splicing a couple wires. Bypassing the ASD allows the fuel pump to function with the turn of the key. Tach? Add an aftermarket unit and run it off the new ignition. The explanation is covered starting at the bottom of page 319. Since the factory tach is controlled by the computer, I think your only option there is to run an aftermarket tach in the conventional manner. Everything else will still work. Kits for the smallblock (Summit #DCC-3690426) run $191.95 US . The Mopar Performance number is P3690426.

And remember, if the computer is no longer an issue, your cam choices go through the roof, while the prices drop off, especially with flat tappet cams. Remember, if you go to a flat tappet cam, you will need the older style slightly longer pushrods as used in all pre-roller LA engines. An example of a seriously strong, but very streetable package takes the 318, ported 360 heads with 2.02 intake valves, Edelbrock Performer RPM AIr Gap intake, and a carb in the 800 cfm range. The cam in question is the CompCams Xtreme Energy 268 flat tappet cam with 901 valvesprings. Great torque, awesome midrange, and 400hp at 6,000 rpm! Now, you can step back just a little in the cam, and intake (say a standard Performer intake) and still have a 350hp engine. Using 360 heads with 1.88 intake valves would save $, shave off a few high rpm HP, but that would be a trade-off since you'd have a smidge more torque in the midrange.
You will need a fuel pressure regulator to keep the pressure below 8psi to the carb. I use the Mallory single inlet, dual outlet unit. The main outlet goes to the carb, the secondary outlet is plumbed right into my fuel tank return line.

thanks for the info guys. I think I will stick with the TBI setup for now but in the future I can see the need for a more powerful mill. This info is also really helpful b/c I am looking at getting a late 60s dodge pickup and builing an engine for it. this would not be my daily driver so i could go all out with it. I plan on doing the top end and then waiting until the rest of my engine needs rebuilding to decide to switch over to carb. If i did switch over what do you think my mileage would be like with the setup you mentioned?

Keep your foot out of it and it's probably be better than anything you get now. Remember, a large part of power increases is due to increased efficiency, not just dumping more fuel into the engine. 15ish?

I am gonna loook for an entire vehicle and take what I need off of it. Then, if it would run, i would put my 318 stuff on the 360, just to piss around with. Would that make as much power as stock? just curious. i was just going to strip it down and use it a a dunebuggy type of machine. something that wont matter if it breaks

Can't say as to how that'll run, but it will be less than optimal.
Propane.....no advantages as far as the engine goes.

Easiest way is to go into the eBay Motors section, click the "parts" link, then just click each category til you get to what you're looking for.

the pre mag 360 comp will not work with teh 318 computer wiring is different also you wont need to open up the intake on your 318 to run the 360 tb. just go to carquest or napa and buy the stock spacer. also when you run the 360 tb on the 318 you will need to run the 318 injectors otherwise it will not run b/c its too rich. i would recomend carbing the engine rather than screwwing around with the computer and fuel injection. there really isnt much you can do to improve performance with the stock computer. Hooker makes headers for the 91 but they are kind of pricy. you can advance the base timing on your engine but if you go to far you will have to run premium.

With these mods i ran a 16.2
360 tb
cold air/ram air intake
k&N fliter
no cat
no a.i.r. pump

since then i have had the trans rebuilt with a shift reprogramed
better exhaust
160 thermostat
better tires
advanced the timming a little more
and a few other odds and ends
i havent been able to run it yet to see if i got any gains but most likely not

Ya missed something there. Only a 16.2? Stock 318 Shelbys ran 16.4. A few more things:

1. There is no stock spacer.

2. The only ways to mate a 360 pre-Magnum TBI to a 318 intake is to fab a spacer (drill your own holes), or open the throttle bores on the intake.

3. The 318/360 wiring IS the same. Mopar sold the 360 TBI as an upgrade for the 318 in the early 90's.

4. 318 injectors in the 360 TBI. No wonder you only ran 16.2!

One more thing. Stop spreading mis-information. Every one of your comments has already been addressed with the correct information. All you have to do is READ the thread.
