Subject: How Often do you change synthetic oil
IP: Logged

Message:
I told a friend of mine that I was going to change the oil on my R/T to Mobile 1, with a FRAM 7000 mile oil filter. He recommended to me to that since I put on mostly highway miles, to change the filter every 6000 miles, and the Mobile 1 every 12000. I know what I think about the idea, but I wanted some feedback from others and to hear how often you change your synthetic

I have a 2000 R/T and have been using M1 since I bought the truck. I change at apx 3500mi., filter too. It's cheap insurance. You can stretch the interval if you want, but why? I can see if you put a ton of miles on your truck each year that the cost of oil changes will start to add up, but I only put about 7 thou on mine in a year.

In my 4.7L I change the filter every 5,000 miles and the M1 every 15,000 miles. I'm at 61,000+ miles on my truck and everything is doing OK. Your freind has a good Idea there. I can go almost a year on an Oil Change. Had it Lab tested one time when I did my 10,000 mile #2 filter change, and it came out very good. So I keep the 15,000 mile interval now with great confidence.

I just changed from dino oil to Amsoil after at 38K miles.
Is there any benefit of changing the Amsoil for the first time at 3K or so? Will it benefit the engine in anyway?

On my '89 I only change oil every 5k or so, use whatever oil is cheapest at WallMart and the cheapest Fram filter. It's only got 192k on the engine and I'm wondering if I will get another couple hundred thousand miles if I switch to synthetics.

I use Mobil 1 and I change the oil and filter every 5000. The oil probably could go longer but I wouldn't try long intervals without an oil analysis program.

3000-4000 drains with synthetic is a waste IMHO. If your going to change it out that often I would use Pennsoil or Chevron/Havoline Supreme(excellent dino oils at a great price) and a Wallmart Supertech filter(inexspensive with synthetic media I believe). Otherwise a good synthetic or synthetic blend can go 7500k easily. If your satisfying your severe service warranty guidlines (3000 mile changes) and feel better using synthetic and a ten dollar filter in your baby thats fine too, just stating my opinion.

I change at about 6000. Only do about 12,000 a year so I just change it once in the spring and again in the fall.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

I change it at 40,000, whether it needs it or not!

J/K!

I use M1 10W30 in my 4.7, with either a wix, or a supertech(wal-mart) filter. I change abgout every 5-6,000.

I'm paranoid with all the 'sludge' info out there.

I change mine every 5000, Mobil 1. Here's a link to my web page. You can see what my heads looked like at 80,000mi.

how can we prevent that sludging 4.7 problem.
do some oils have detergents in them. i heard synthetics do but not from a reliable source.

The sludging thing has been going on in mine for 95000 miles now, shows no effect. The problem could be solved by using some material that transfers heat better. Some steel or aluminum piece would work much better. Also piss poor location of the PCV.

Oils certified for "Gas or Diesel"(Mobils truck and SUV as example) will be more detergent to meet diesels soot propensity. This will also keep a gas motor cleaner

Mostly short trips for me. So, every 6k oil and filter. Amsoil. Spring and fall unless I am going on a long trip and the oil is getting close to needing a change then I might short change it. But once when the mileage was 4k, -going on 3500 mi trip- I changed just the filter and topped off with new oil.

I use Quaker State full synthetic. I change every 3,000 miles and chage oil filter too. Just use a cheap Fram oil filter though. Living in the great white north (just outside Toronto), I like to make sure I chage religously in the winter and maybe let slide a bit more in the summer. Every oil change the oil is really black! I use 5W30 in winter and 10W30 in summer.

Quick question. If you let the truck sit over night, can you
change the oil filter without having to drain the oil?

That's a good question. I know when I changed my oil and filter I had a lot of oil drop from the filter, but I didn't wait overnight. I do know that I talked with a parts store near my house and he told me of a system I could buy that I could put on my truck where I could put 2 filters on my truck. That system costs about $200 from this AMZOIL rep that lives near me. No, I haven't changed to AMZOIL - Yet, but am considering it for my next oil change.

Your oil filter is above the main sump so unless your truck is upside down you can change the oil filter anytime without draining the oil.

To keep the oil from running down your arm use a 2 litre plastic soda bottle. Cut the bottom off and slide over filter(after loosening filter a bit). Works great on my 4.7.

How Often do you change Amsoil synthetic oil
IP: Logged

Message:

There is no blanket answer.

Not all oils are the same ... not all engines perform the same (even using the same oil) ... therefore, depending upon your engine, your driving habits, and your climate ... your oil will perform differently than the next guys. Therefore your oil change interval will differ as well.

Severe Driving - City Driving - Stop and Go Driving --- Extreme Heat - Extreme Cold - Engine Condition - all affect the life expectancy of an oil.

Mobil1 is a fine oil.

Do you commute in your Dakota ... or do you DRIVE your Dakota? (as in pushing the pedal to the metal). 7500 miles on Mobil1 is as far as I would push the envelope for simply commuting and 6000 miles if you drive it hard.

The 3k Mile Oil Change Interval MYTH.

We all know 3k oil changes are overkill.

Amsoil Clearly States --- that you can extend your manufacturers recommended oil change interval "... up to 2-3 times the manufacturers recommendation" using Amsoil Synthetic Motor Oil.

The Amsoil 25k mile oil change interval (extended drain) is under "ideal conditions" only (25k or one year whichever comes first - changing the filter at 12.5k miles or 6 months whichever comes first) - after establishing your vehicles ability to do so performing Used Oil Analysis.

*** Amsoil, with 30 years of laboratory testing, and millions of highway miles of testing ... have determined that the 25,000 mile and/or 1 year (whichever comes first) extended drain can be accomplished --- under normal driving conditions --- and in a mechanically sound engine. ***

Redline (in a Press Release and on their website) recently confirmed that Synthetic Oils can go 25k miles between change, but Redline does not recommend it with their oils.

I try to be very clear when talking about extended drains. 10,000 mile oil change is absolutely possible. Up to a 25,000 mile interval is possible under certain conditions. But the KEY here is that --- The 3,000 mile recommendation is overkill, especially with superior synthetic oils.

Due to Amsoil's superior synthetic composition and advanced performance additives, AMSOIL performs much longer than do conventional petroleum and other synthetic motor oils. No other major oil manufacturer matches AMSOIL's 25,000-mile or one-year drain interval recommendations (whichever comes FIRST, changing the filter every six months).

However, the 25,000 mile /1 year that is on the back of the bottle is NOT an absolute! One must realize that is for non-severe service (highway miles where you have stable operating conditions) and that the indicated drain interval also has a time period of 1 year maximum as well.
