Subject: 318 RC Track Times??
IP: Logged

Message:
I hope and soon will buy a 99 RC with 68k miles and auto for $5800. The reason why it is so cheap(Im Guessing....cause the dealer says there is nothing wrong with it) is because it is a Stripper.....no power anything...It might have tilt and cruise....anyways I was wondering What would be the track time for this dakota for the 1/8th and possibly 1/4th mile?

I hope it will run a High 15 but it may not

what you guys think.

Being a RC and auto, yeah, I would put it in the high 15's maybe. Shouldn't see much worse than a 16.0. My '97 318 CC SLT auto (almost power everything - windows, locks, mirrors, etc) with just a hyptertech PCM and CAI was running about 15.8-15.9. I also weighed in at 4,380 (sub-woofers and all). With a good launch, think you'll be into the 15's easy.

You will definitely see the 15's...I would guess mid 15's. You are only talking a 15hp difference between the 318 and the 360 in the R/T. Plus its a bare bones model....every 100lbs. is worth a tenth in the quarter!! Plus the old gen2's with the 318 ran in the fifteens...not that much weight difference between the two trucks. Hope this helps!! mike

Yes, but the R/T's are lowered, lighter, and have more torque as well. One thing we missed out on is what gear ratio do you have? That'll make a difference of several tenths of a second. Also depends on the driver a lot too. I've smoked a CC R/T with my SLT CC 5.2 when I was only running mid-high 15's (by smoked, I mean I had about 2 car lengths by 45mph and still pulling away, and he was definitely on it from the line). Wouldn't be surprised to see it run a mid 15, especially if it has 3.92 gears, but don't be disappointed if you only run 15's. Heck, I've spent over 2K in mods just to get mine running mid 15's

Thanks everyone! If I get good launches I hope to see 15's I am picking up the truck this Saturday I got it for $6000 with TT&L added on to make it the even 6000...It has some dings in it and the bumper cover looks like it is sagging....but nothing i cant fix....there is no visible or even noticeable engine damage and thank god for that.

I will try to post a few pics of it when I get the truck. It has two black racing stripes on it and the only thing it has is Tilt and Cruise...but nothing else.

I wont run it at the track just yet not until I can sell my other truck...that way I have left over money for something that could possibly go wrong with this truck.

Ill let yall know more about it later....and Now Im proud to be the owner of a V8 Dakota....I have had my v6 for a lil over a year and it has done me well....was never dissapointed with it and hope for the same with the small block.

lowering doesn't add any speed..torque differences are minimal...and r/t's do not weigh less!! Congratulations on the purchase though...either way i know you will have some fun!! mike

Thanx 94Dak R/T ... I sure will and hence the name change due to more power.....couch.....cough.....i mean new truck....Had something in my throat :P

I hope this truck will be as consistent and as in good mechanical condition like the last one i had!

I have to say that the 3.9 was a hell of a motor and I am sure this one will be too!!

From my understanding, the lowering keeps less air from getting underneath the truck, which helps drag? Dunno, just what I've heard from 1 or 2 places, 1 of the reasons to lower and ground effects.

BTW, 300 lb.-foot vs 345 lb.-foot. That's a significant difference in my book, and it's 20 more HP as well (230 vs 250)

Probably right on the weight, I was just thinking with the suspension of the R/T it might be lighter, but just looked at an R/T RC with 1/8 tank of gas weighing just over 3900 lbs (I think driver included), which is where most Gen 3 Dakota RC's will weigh.

Ken- you are correct about drag theory..but any gain would be to minimal to worry about especially on a 4500 pound truck. Also as far as the torque goes..it all matters where in the rpm band it starts and how the rest of the truck is set up. Anyways by buying this cheaper 318 dak...he can spend the money saved from buying an R/T on some power adders..something like a SUPERCHARGER?? But all in all its up to the individual..besides..it doesn't matter whats in your vehicle..it won't go anywhere without a good driver!! mike

Tis true, but then again, I've spent about $2000 just to get my SLT CC 5.2 to run the same as a CC R/T. Course, I can go home at the end of the day and tow 4,000lb worth of junk... Like an R/T!! ;-)

Actually not to be taking sides but you really cant take an R/T and tow lots of things.....isnt the lowered suspension make the towing capacity alot lower.....just a thought.....correct me if wrong and yes I will be getting used to the dakota and will try to be the best driver i can be for it!

That was my whole point :-) A R/T is rated to tow 2,000lbs, which really any truck out there can do that on the bumper ball. There was a big foopa about that when the R/T came out, becuase it was rated to tow like most other Dakotas in the literature for it. Ma Mopar had to send letters out to R/T buyers, and offer to buy the R/T back if the owner no longer wanted it due to the tow rating. Payload is pretty low as well (I think)

Very true..towing is one of the biggest differences between them..but one last thing about u spending 2000 to get yours running with an R/T. You have to remember that no two engines that come out of a mass production factory will perform the same..one motor might run OK and one might run like a raped ape. Like i had stated before..to each his own..but i am sure you can find some ppl using the 318 to whip up on some R/Ts and find the right combo without braeking the bank!! Good luck!! Very good points Ken!! mike

Just to put my $0.02 in. my 98 RC 318 auto ran 16.400 @ 80mph with a 2.2 60ft. mine has the 3.55 suregrip rear in it. feels real strong off the bottom but once you get on the top side it runs out of breath. its as bone stock as it comes. only options it realy has other than the sport appearance package is the V8 auto and the suregrip rear. this track time is also in hottest time of year so this fall ill make another try. the heat is brutal down in louisiana. i dunno if anyone posted anything on it but..mopar muscle done an artical on a low buck 400hp 318. they used a basic rebuild. here are the specs.

.040 La block
Mag cylinder heads
M1 mopar intake
KB pistons, 10:1 comp
Comp cams 280H camshaft, valvetrain changed to flat tappet hydraulic cam with custom length pushrods that can be found through mopar perfromance.
750 Demon carb and spacer
Billet dist.
TTI headers

dynoed at exactly 400 horse @ 6150rpms....

i figured that give ya some ideas for the future. i plan to do that build for mine in the future. i just hope the tranny hold up to it. i dunno of any place that sells build up parts for those auto overdrive trannys

FlameRedDak,

Where are you running at to get 16.40's@80- seems pretty slow- also check the PCM for stickers saying that it has been updated - may have been reflashed.

My '99 CC 318/auto/3.55's was running 15.7's@88 box stock - you should be at least 2/10's quicker than my times since your RC weighs less.

I agree, it should have been quicker than that. But as far as I know..it a plain jane truck. The comp appears stock with no sticker or decal saying its been modded any. I was just putting it in D and goin. Shifting manually didnt help my time any. Maybe this winter it will shave a tenth or two off...
