Subject: DEALERSHIP TRANS FLUSH???

Message:
I have a 98 5.2 dak 4x4 and it has 95,000 on it. I bought the truck two years ago and I havent ever serviced the transmission. The fluid is still red and dosent look bad but I want to change it to amsoil. Now I talked to the service person and he got all worked up when I told him that I wanted to put amsoil in. He said that dex 4 is what suppose to be in the trans and its far superior. And I said that I changed the fluids in the front and rear diffs. and I saw a better mpg. And he said that I should not have seen any difference at all(75/90 amsoil syn). Then he said that I would be asking for troubble flushing the trans with there machine. He said that this could get debree in the valve body and that I should just change the fluid and let the converter keep what ever fluid in there stay there. Why would it be bad to put amsoil in there, and why would it be bad to use the pressure flushing machine? I think that this guy is a dumb a$$, what do all of you think? Help please!!

I think you pegged this guy, he's trying to blow smoke up your azz. The truck should use Mopar ATF+4 or atleast ATF+3, Dextron is not supposed to be used in Dak tranny's.

I flushed out my 2000 tranny with Amsoil when it had 80K in it and have not had any problems, 130K+ now . By flushing I don't mean with a flushing machine, i flushed it by Amsoils recommmendations, they have a procedure at thier website. If your going to put Amsoil in flush out the old stuff. 7 qts of new fluid + 7 qts of dirty fluid = 14 quarts of dirty fluid.

I have heard some horror stories about tranny's that were flushed by a machine, I would never have my tranny flushed by a machine. Another thing about machine flushing, do you think they replace the filters?

Well, that would require dropping the pan and be more work, besides flushing backflows the filter(s) blowing all the funky stuff into your tranny. Why replace the filters if they have been blown clean,,,, NOT. The filters should be replaced everytime you replace the fluid, dropping the pan type service or flushing type service.

At 38K miles, I had my tranny flushed, but notby the dealer. I watched him do it. He pulled the pan, repalced the filter, and some kind of fitting to hook up the machine where the filter used to be. Got 60K on it now, with lots of high speed driving, some slow off roading, and some moderate/heavy towing. Still shifts like the day I bought it.

Thanks for the fast replies, typo he said atf 4, but he was mad when I said that I bought AMSOIL, "why would you want that stuff in there?" atf 4 is far superior! I dont know and it seems that there are a lot of feeling on the subject but I am still leaning towards AMSOIL in there. How do you know which transmission you have? I cant find any info on that? Thanks again!!

Looks like there are different procedures to flush with a machine. I have seen it done by connecting the machine to the cooler lines, this made me cringe since the filters were not replaced. If they dropped the pan, flushed through the filter fitting and replaced the filter, I would be all for that since the filter is replaced and the pan cleaned out.

Is Amsoil better than +4? Maybe. Who knows for sure? And how would you test that? And if it is, how much better? Again, who knows.

So, here's my thought, FWTW. ATF+4 is pretty darn good, from what I can find out. For the vast majority of truck drivers, it works just fine. Simply follow the service procedures and don't worry about it.

If, OTOH, you abuse your truck: Heavy hauling/towing, high heat (Yuma, AZ), extreme cold (northern Maine), heavy off roading, racing, etc. Then it's probably worth it to search for every edge possible.
