Subject: 15.2 mpg on my R/T
IP: Logged

Message:
I am finally seeing some numbers I like. Last tank of city driving gave me an average of 15.2 miles per gallon. The best I have ever gotten. I am up from 12.5 originally. Modifications include:

Mobil 5w40 engine
Mobil 90w in rear diff.
MSD ignition system (superconductor wires, blaster SS coil, 6A, etc)
Napa brass cap & rotor
Tire pressure to 45psi
Mopar PCM
Ported/polished 52mm TB with K&N panel

I figure a Tonn. cover and if I drive a little easier I might hit 16. By the way - this is my 4th tank on 87 octane with the Mopar ECU...not a ping yet. I think the 180 degree thermostat is helping that.

i really don't think your tires will last very long if they are at 45psi. You are not going to save any money buying new tires to gain 1-2 mpg in the r/t

I get about 14 in the city and 17-18 on the Highway.

Everyone with an 88-96 dak needs to get in on the custom
gauge group buy. We only need 13 more. www.speedhut.com

If you want better mileage, just convert it into Imperial measure, 17 would be like 25mpg!

I have a '03 R/T. I now have 12,000 miles on the beast. In the city I get an average of 14.7 MPH.
On the highway at 60 mph on cruise, I can pick up mid high 17's with tops near about 18.5.

If I cruise near 55 MPH (for experimental purposes) I can hit high 19's.

I love the performance of the 360 cube'er and don't moan about the gas. I DO KNOW though that my next new vehicle will be a Volkswagon TDI Jetti Turbo-Diesel. Yeppers, the days of 'reasonable fuel prices' are OVER! My next 'ride' will give me high 55's in the miles-per-gallon game. For performance, I'll ride my motorcycle!

How are you calculating you MPG. If you are using the overhead console computer it's wrong. the factory claims 14 city 17 HWY. Use this formula if you want to see your actual MPG
1. Drive to gas light comes on
2. Fill up 10 even gallons and reset trip odometer
3. When gas light comes back on stop pull out your calculator and divide miles traveld by 10.
I have done this in variations from day 1 on my 2001 R/T had NEVER have seen 15 MPG.
Either I drive with a heavy foot which is the way an R/T owner should or something wacky.

I've had my '00 RT RC for a little over a month now. I've been consistently averaging 17-18 mpg. I also have a soft tonneau on my truck. I'm pleased because my old '98 4X4 CC 5.2L averaged about 15 mpg, with a fiberglass tonneau. Not bad mpg for a "sport" truck.

kevin: Out of curiosity I tried your idea of the 10gal test this w/e. Got 15.6 mixed city/hwy. Also reset the computer for the test, it indicated 15.7, so not too much difference.
Worth the cost of the fuel just for peace of mind.
clingman: Doubt the increase from just the toneau. When I bought mine it didn't have one, when I put the hard ton. on I did not see any increase at all. I've had it off since for trips with a bike in the bed, still no difference.
You got a 1.7mpg increase???

Thinking about the mileage in question, I came to this theory. Due to California emissions crap required on all vehicles sold here and the fact that the highest pump octane is 91 is the difference in mileage. Any R/T east of me will have better gas mileage. Can anyone in California post 15+ MPG? City that is. My guess is no.

By the way, my calculations are based on tripometer calculations only. The computer isn't always accurate.

I might hit 16 this tank. 165 miles and I am exactly half full.
