Subject: 4.56 gears

i call about a pcm and headers today and the shop highly recommended 4.56 gears instead! i have a 98 318 4x4 with 8.25 and 3.55 gears. I pull a boat occasionally and also do some highway miles.
i need some input from you guys who have these gears. he mentioned about 2800rpms at 70mph? thats with overdrive right? i cant pull my boat in od? or can i with the gear change? my consious tells me no.
i'm thinkin 4.10? what your advise? installation issues?

You have no clue what you're doing if you think you need anything more than 3:92 gearing to pull anything with the 5.2L V8. I have a '95 Gen2 with that engine and 3:55 gearing, and I pull my boat all the time. The only time you go above 3:92 is when you drag and want to do fast in the quarter or eighth. You will get horrendous mileage with those higher gears as well. If you feel for some reason that your truck is struggling to move, check your filters, oil, etc. Something isn't right. I can almost race in mine with the 3:55 gears while pulling my boat. If you want more power without too much of a mileage hit, just get the 3:92 gears.

Sephiroth he does have a 4x4 and maybe a clubcab as well, if that's the case 4.10 would be the ideal choice, 3.92's not big enough difference to justify cost and labor and 4.56's maybe overkill, 4.10's should not kill your mileage too much, maybe slightly better in town just a little worse on highway. Furthermore, if your tires are large then stock then 4.10's are an even wiser choice.

yes its club cab 4x4. Ive been reading back log posts and i guess the 4.56 really isn't that uncommon. Although, 4.10 may be better suited for me?
As i said, i was calling to possible order headers and the guy (wont mention names or co.) said gears, gears, gears!! best dollar value. He told me to go with gears and when they are in then call him back if i wanted headers or a pcm!?
Maybe he's right!

That is too deep of a ratio. Go with the 3.92 as the first choice and 4.10 as a backup plan.

It is physically impossible to go from 3:55 to 4:10 and not lose any mileage. Either you didn't know your mileage before/after, didn't compute it properly, made another change at the same time (like transmission), or just ain't tellin' the truth. Think about it, if you get say 60mpg doing 3000rpm at 55mph, and you put in lower gearing that requires 4000rpm to do 55mph, how the HELL are you going to maintain 60mpg? Lower gearing makes more power, but drinks more fuel due to higher operating rpms.

As for the CC comment, that makes no difference. My '95 is a CC 4x4 and 3:55 is ownage. I have 3:92 on the '92 V6 CC 4x4 and it gets only two or three mpg more than my '95. Yeah you're going to shout about something being wrong because it's a smaller engine, but it's cranking many more rpms than my '95. Put it this way. At 70~75mph I can do 2000rpm in the '95 V8. In the '92 V6, 70~75mph is more like 2400~2500rpm.

I still don't see the point in going to the 4:10 gearing. 4:anything is racing, plain and simple. Well, racing or extreme-duty towing. Like kj said, go with the 3:92 gearing. If you decide the wallet-hit in gas is affordable and want even more, then go to the racing/drag gearing. I can tell you you'll be more than pleased with the power difference between 3:55 and 3:92 though.

Ok lets place this scenario:

30 Inch tire height
3.55 Gears
70MPH
In an auto with OD thats - 1948 RPMS
With 3.92 gears thats - 2151 RPMS
With 4.10 gears thats - 2250 RPMS
With 4.56 gears thats - 2503 RPMS

With a 33 Inch tire height it looks like this:

1771/1956/2046/2275 RPMS

Now I don't know your tire height but you probably do so check your info on this website.

what about the overdrive issue? with the new gearing you stil have to keep the od off? correct? so then with 4.10 or 4.56 what rpm's would you be running then? i run 31" tires?

If i'm calculating this correct i could also go to a 26" tire. To get a appx. 3.92 gear or a 22" tire for 4.10 and a 19" tire for 4.56 with the stock 3.55?
I'm not being smart here, but helping other realize the 15% ration change in relationship to gearing vs tire size.
Am i correct? If not correct me.
The opposite applies to a higher ratio?

I have 75R15's, so about a 30" tire. That's why i recomended the 3:92s. You have a slightly larger tire so with 3:92s, you should be about the same as a vehicle like mine with 30" tires and 3:55s. Still, how many of you can say you get 19.6mpg in city driving? I do every single day, and I love it. Oh and I meant getting that with your 5.2/4.7, not your Honda Civic :p! When I hit the highway I get even better mileage.

Gas milage really isn't an issue. I've been getting an average of 11 town -13 highway for 5 years.
I bought the truck beacuse of looks and power. I just want to unleash more of its potential.
I think with some of the future mod's to come (after gears)headers, heads, and porting I will end up close to where i'm currently at.

I have a 5.2 with 4.10's and I average 16.7 with the 3.55's I averaged 16.4, so explain that...... No I will. Your engine works harder to get up to speed with taller gears, plus there are fewer downshifts on hills. I pull 3 jet ski's that might weigh as much as a boat, and I pull in o/d, and dont downshift on slight hills like I used to. Going up a decent sized hill, I just tap the brake, and unlock the t/c that is usually enough to get me up the hill.

Dumbass, you drive like the idiots here, you lay into the gas from a stop. I noticed that if I floor the damn truck every time I have to stop and start again, I drop to around 12-13mpg. Yes, if you try ragging the truck with 3:55s, you WILL suffer poor mileage. However, if you're the idiotic type who thinks every green light means to drag like you're in Nascar, you will get better mileage with higher gearing simply because it gets up to speed faster and doesn't work as hard doing so.

Use some common-sense here. Higher RPMs means each cylinder is firing more often. That means you're dumping more fuel. In stop and go driving, higher gears mean better mileage on a stock setup. However, on the highway, you're going to be turning more RPMs, and thus wasting fuel.

One other thing.
Has any of you guys attempted this yourself? If so, what problem did you run into?
It looks as though the front end will be more difficult!
I called one place locally (Iowa)and the guys thought i was nuts! He told me it would be a 2,000 job. I mentioned, I would supply the parts.
He said then that he's not interested???

Never swapped them. When I got the '95 5.2L I thought I'd swap them with the '92 3.9L so my big V8 truck would have my towing power and my smaller V6 truck would be a good beat-around vehicle. Boy was I mistaken! Hauls my Bayliner boat like there's nothing back there. You only notice it when it takes you twice as long to stop, haha!

Anyway, the rear shouldn't be too much of a hassle, but I dunno' about the front.

Blow me! I'm not a dumbass, but you obviously are! NASCAR isn't drag racing retard!!!!!!!! NASCAR has no green lights either!!! Higher gearing gets up to speed faster? One more point to prove your credibility! I never said anything about flooring the truck you inconsiderate prick, I said the engine works harder with 3.55 gears. I am correct in saying that! How do you know what I drive like? I dont drive like an idiot. You insult everyone here by calling them idiots, but I guess that makes you the idiot, huh? So more rpms mean you use more gas all of the time? Once again you are wrong! Find a vehicle with a standard trans, and a mpg computer. Take it down a large hill in a high gear, and watch the mpg, now go down the same hill 2 gears lower, and watch the mpg.....Weird, the mileage is better in a lower gear!!! I know it is totally different than accelerating, but it still proves you wrong! Higher gears get better mileage in a stock setup-congrats, you are correct, one thing you overlook, is that DAKOTAS DONT COME STOCK WITH BOATS!!!!! Pulling a boat totally negates your fact since the vehicle is no longer stock! Ooooh I have an idea....Wanna see who can piss farther?

guys,
thanks for the info. I did order the 4.10 gears today. However, with the cost of the dial indicator, 1" torque wrench (they suggested, tool for setting the backlash, etc. It was an extra 300.00. So i called around some shops. Labor is 300.00 per end. So it wasn't a tough choice to use the professionals, especially considering i'll probobly never use the tools again.
I'll post more info in a week or so when the gears are in.
