4.7 is ohc and the 5.9 is a pushrod motor I think. I have an 04 CC 4x4 4.7 and the thing reminds me of the good old dodge muscle car. You can make that 4.7 a very nice small block and it performs and sound like an old small block motor from the late 60's. Seems like a very strong motor.
I have owned a 383 66 dodge and a 318 in a van both were good motors and gave me years of great service. I love this 4.7. I was sceptical, but not now. Well so far, it only has 1050 mile on it.

If I remeber correctly my Dad's 5.9 is limited to 110 mph. The 5.9s are quick, I have no experience with the 4.7. But a number of mechanics I respect have a saying: There is no replacement for displacement.

An auto club cab 5.9 with a good driver behind the wheel will always beat an auto club cab 4.7. A 5-speed single cab 2wd 4.7 and r/t are close though. I know from experience. I've owned two 5.9 Dakotas, a stock single cad and modded club cab. I've raced numerous different 4.7 Daks and they've all been pretty close. Closest was with a club cab 2wd 5-speed, only beat him by 2 car lengths. Also, we used to own a 2wd quad cab 4.7 Dak and it was by no means slow. Didn't really feel that much slower than my single cab r/t!

Lowrider190-

As far as that goes, the 4.7 is probably the better choice (sorry 5.9 fans, I own one, too!). It gets slightly better gas mileage and can usually be had for far less money than a 5.9 Dak. The 5.9 wasn't offered in as many packages as the 4.7 either, so finding one will also be harder. Most 5.9 Daks are r/t's. There is also more aftermarket supprot for 4.7 Daks. Remember, I can say this from personal experience, as between my parents and I, we've owned two 5.9's and 1 4.7. I love my r/t, but performance issues aside, and those factors being considered, the 4.7 is probably the better buy. Also, insurance on r/t's ain't cheap. My insurance is $250 a month!!!

Only thing is I always wanted a R/T don't know why. There really isn't many v-8 dakotas here for sale.:( I am just look for a new truck to buy later this year right now. From what i read here r/ts are alittle faster. And i hear they handle good. I would love to get a T/A but i need a truck cuz i build house for a living. So I just want to best of both worlds. I guess the best thing would be is to test drive both trucks and go form there.

From what I have read, the 5.9/auto and the 4.7/5spd are about the same in performance. I have an 02 reg cab dak with a 4.7/5spd and use it to commute about 110 miles round trip each day. The truck is a blast to drive and pulls over 20MPG on the highway. Bang for the buck, its a great deal.

Ok Hear are the numbers again. Mopar Now! magizine did a 5.9 vs 4.7 test back in there spring '03 issue the 4.7 won hands down

-----4.7L----------------5.9L R/T
15.68 @ 90.22 to 15.71 @ 91.36
15.29 @ 90.54 to 16.05 @ 91.27
15.41 @ 90.33 to 15.81 @ 90.98

both were regular cab short boxes but the 4.7 had a 3.55 rear end with no limited slip differential the R/T 3.92s with a sure-grip! Both were automatics and it was on a cold traction limited track in Michigan so the numbers might be a little low.

If I remember correctly the R/T lost because they couldn't launch it. The higher mph in the quarter shows that if they both had the same traction, the R/T would've won. The difference between 1mph is about .2 seconds.

Here's what you need to consider....

If you want good performance with better driveability then get the 4.7L. The R/T will beat the 4.7L from a stand still. Most of the time you are moving. At any speed you choose, the 4.7L will pull away from the R/T because the 4.7L has better throttle response and the 4.7L's 45re auto shifts into passing gear 3 times faster than the 46re in the R/T.

If you want "potential" then get the R/T. It's very easy to get over 300hp out of the 5.9L.

And don't everbody say they are BS number again. The 4.7 has the advantage becouse of its 5speed auto. I is like having a 4.35 gears in your 5.9 trans. But there is much more after market stuff for the 5.9 you can easly have a 12s second daily driver with the right aftermarket parts.

I would think an R/T would handle better than and of the other Dakotas becouse it is lower and has bigger swaybars.

sorry to hear all that stephen. I have also had some bad luck.
All in the past now. I just hope I can keep my insurance down. I am already attracting attention fron the police here.
Last week a cop was making a right turn and I could see him stopped half way through his turn in my rearview. You know how they do that sh-it.
I revved it a little and kept going. Hell with em', they can't even catch the gangster murderers we have here and they are worried about ???? whatever.
