I have afew freinds that have had problems with the suspensions on Polaris Quads. The bushings are common failure points. I have also been shopping for one lately and have found that Honda and Yamaha have the best reputation.

Kawasaki also has a promotion on right now with 3 yr extended warranty; however I have no idea of the quality of their products.

Waranties on ATV's are really hard to get honored from what I have seen. You have to PROVE to them it was a defect, ect. Ba$tards anyway!

Well today I got a new Piston in my 2003 Warrior. The cylinder wall hadn't even got too glazed and I already tore her down!

Actually. I got lucky.
My friend bought a USED 1997 Warrior. Was supposed to be all stock except for the muffler and filter, etc.
So he got this piston kit with a new cam and valve springs. Is supposed to near double the power when used with a high perf pipe and such.
Well, we tore his down only to find his has been over bored! So, he has to order a over bore piston.
So today we got some more gaskets and tore mine down. We installed the lightweight forged piston. It brings the compression from 9.2 to around 10.5:1
I got it back together and started it up tonight. But it is too late to take it out to break it in.

Here's some pictures someone asked for.

Here's the bike on the trailer. We left it on the trailer when we worked on it. Not enough room in my garage to do much else.
On the left is the wifes Polaris 250 two-stroke. It has been wrecked by every man who has rode it. Including a nasty compound fracture to my brother in law. He has been laid up since last November. He is supposed to walk again in a month or so! My sister said he's not allowed on a ATV ever again. Bummer!

Got the piston out and here's the comparison between the two.

And here it is with the cylinder installed.

You can find the rest of my pictures in HERE.

I just bought a 2003 Polaris Sportsman 500, and I love it. I was shopping around for awhile, and to be honest, they're all basically the same ATV. There's slight differences from company to company, but when I compared em, it boils down to whatever brand you like.

Yup. It matters what you plan on doing with it.

For the Dunes BANSHEE's are popular.

For the rocky offroads, don't drive a Banshee. Drive a Polaris. My Warrior is kind of in the middle. It handles GREAT off road and elec start and reverse are nice. And with my last mod to it, I can go up any monster hill at the Dunes with the heavy B@stard.

Here's a pic form last week. I let my 9 yr old daughter ride my wife's Polaris.

The same bike that messed up my bro in law pretty bad so I was kind of nervous. She liked it a LOT better than riding her little 70 tho!

Jeremy, and GraphiteDak,

Good info. Having lived in the City since 1987, I never realized that there were basically "three different set-ups" for ATV's ... whether riding dunes, off-roading, or "what-ever-the-middle-is". The industry has really changed.

Graphite,

Enough with the gnarly knee pictures. I had to lay down a "bored out" Kawasaki 900 at top speed once. The only damage was to my knee but it was all superficial and healed well. But those pictures still make me hurt.

I've heard people complain about the BIG hunter Polaris ATV's too.

But my wife's two stroke POLARIS has been wrecked by EVERY MAN who has ever riden it, even me. TOP heavy. BUT, it was still running upside down when my bro in law had his leg busted open. The bike seems tough. The OTHER BRO IN LAW rode his wife's 4 stroke under DEEP water and sucked it into the engine (4 stroke). We just pulled it out of the water, pulled the plug. Cranked it over a few times. Then rode it again.
His broke down as far as breaking the chain goes and once his wife wrecked it and it bent the front spindle. Maybe the HEAVIER ones break easier, who knows.
From what I have seen, Honda ATV's DO last a LONG time. Honda should have stuck to ATV's HA HA!
Their cars can't have an impact with a TRASH CAN and then drive home!

Oh yeah. Since the AMSOIL guy reminded me. Here's my BRO IN LAWS leg from months back. He's STILL not walking on it!

That's what happens when you let a HEAVY POLARIS land on you at high speeds. It kind of scared me letting my litle 9 yr old ride it.

Hey GraphiteDak,
Are those the Gecko sand paddles on your quad? How do you like them? I've searched around and they seem to have the best price. Just wondering how they perform before I spend some money on them.

4X4 DAK, (Funny. My new license plate says that).
Several family members have the Sand Gecko's.
I have the Sand Sharks on my Wife's Bike and I have what are called Sand Star's on mine. My rims are wide as hell too. They are 10" by 10" I think! They make the rear paddles WIDE like a dragster or something LOL!

This all reminds me of my Honda 90 ATC (remember the 3 wheelers?) I had when I was a kid. A friend of mine had gotten too close to the edge of the river on a wide sweeping turn (he didn't have the body language thing down in order to turn it) and rolled it into the river. I ran over and saw it floating upside down, randomly bouncing along the riverbed. Who knew those balloon-like tires could actually act as a floatation device? We pulled it out and lifted the front end. Water poured out from the tailpipe. A couple of turns on the starter and more water choking and spitting from the pipe and it ran again. Those things were certainly durable. We really abused that thing, looking back. The time we destroyed the engine we had spent an entire day doing donuts on the ice in low gear. I guess the engines weren't designed to run in low at high RPM all day. Who'd have known. ;)

On another note.. we need an "ignore" feature on this forum. Any thoughts on getting that implemented?

Mark

we've got 2004 honda rancher 450 4x4 cool four wheeler cause you can switch in and out of 2wd and then do donuts or tailslides. have a 300 full time 4x4 which from 5mph up is just as fast. wierd considering it's a 95 300 cc. however go up a hill in the 450 and it's a world of difference. there are faster 450's and 500's than the honda (almost any other from what i hear) but we wanted 5 spd and to not mess with the bike just ride and that's what you get from a honda. jason
