Hey, has anyone had trouble with their rear axel valve seals leaking oil? I put my dak in for inspection and emissions, and next thing I know I'm forking over hundreds of dollars to repair the seals. Any info would be appreciated.

rear axel valve seals...

I've done alot of "axle" work and have never heard of valve seals in an axle.

Ok, you have the outer seals on the shafts at either end of the housing and the pinnion seal.
having any of them replaced is a joke and if you paid "hundreds of dollars" to get any one of the three or all of them you got ripped, and if you got a shop book I'l sure that you and your buddies could have done it over a case of your favorite beverage.

I'm guessing that the guys at your shop saw you coming.

If your ever in Pa, give me a holler and I'll help you in the ways of the axle.

that is common on the grommet. It just means that it is filled to a good level and the gears are throwing the G.O. around the way they are supposed to, and the constant wetness will get through eventually.

I havn't looked but usually there are threads to put a plug in the hole, and then you can put teflon tape around the plug, and no more wetness.

The other problem that occurred was the drums on the rear wheels were saturated with fluid. The drums were replaced as well. Is that a common problem?

ACTGOG,
You should really have someone hold your hand when you go to service your truck, at least until you know what's what. Ask people on the forum before taking your truck anywhere.

My pass side axle seal leaks a little oil into the drum brakes. Pretty normal on any high mile RWD vehicle. I clean it every 10K with some brakekleen.

Total cost: 3 bucks.
