Cold, Rammed air is better than just cold air (pulled from within front fender for example)

The tricky part is finding a way to truly RAM the air into the TB. None of the cool-looking hoods with scoops will provide even MEASUREABLE pressure increase to the intake air at anyting less than 100MPH.

Cowl-induction actually can provide some RAMming effect but is not as effective a true RAM-air. (Cowl-induction uses the WINDSHIELD to provide a high-pressure area)

It is real easy to stick you hand out the window at 60 MPH and think... WOW...how can I RAM all this air pressure into my engine. Unfortunatly, the physics of airflow do not work like that.

If you check out ESPN2 and watch drag-racing,(NA engines) you will see that for a true RAMming effect, the intake must be at least a FOOT from any surface that has laminear airflow. This would mean somting sticking out of your hood about a foot that is perhaps 8-10 inches around.(take a course in airflow dynamics for more info)

Ah, i getcha. So really, unless i get one of those old school muscle car hood intakes there is no difference performance wise. Well then I would wonder if after spending all of that money on a hood would it in fact not be as effective as a regular kit? Just an appearance upgrade?

Old school musclecar "ram-air" hoods do nothing but cold air as well, unless your talking about one of those foot high pro-stock, aftermarket scoops form the 80's. The cold air hood with the best 'wow' factor was the Air-grabber. You had a switch on the dash so you could raise your scoop up from a flat hood, then it had reflective sharks teeth on the side to boot. The 71 Roadrunner or GTX looked the best with it IMO. The 74 Trans-Am was a good design to get the intake in front of the car a little, and the 70 Challenger TA was good as well, getting the scoop up off the hood. Even the Challenger TA's designer said although it looked like it should work it didn't really do anyhting but cold air. He stole the design from the air scoop on a P-51 Mustang which did work, but those things went 400+ mph.

Actually, Ram air hoods can (not all do) help a little...

First of all you have then engine sucking in air, at a certain vacuum pressure... by aiding the flow of air by using a ram air hood, like the Viper and Dakota ram air hoods, you are actually helping reduce the vacuum pressure, so the engine doesn't have to suck so hard... It can make a small difference, but there are lots of other factors to consider, like added weight of the hood, flow characteristics of the air ducting, etc..

NACA style ducts are not new, they have been proven time and time again to help bring in air from an otherwise flat panel...

One thing to consider with larger scoops is weather or not the engine can handle all that air...if not, then the scoop will actually help slow down the vehicle do to the backup of air...

By saying a hood obtains a pressure increase (ram air) that's what I ment was actually a reduction in the vacuum. I don't think any manufacturer would have the balls to claim it actually produces boost like a turbo or supercharger! I still say it's nothing noticible on any kind of dyno over a good cold air setup. It would be really hard to prove as the dyno would have to be in a windtunnel! There would have to be better performance gains to be had for much less then the price difference between a $230 K&N and a $1000+ ram air hood. That said, my main exterior mod is going to be a shaker hood.

I thought the opening only had to be 2-3" above the deck to get away from the bondary layer air. The old six pack hoods were supposed to work too. Despite it's great looks, shaker also costs you a little drag.

The trade off would be the fact the cold air intake is sucking in air that has been heated from the engine... I thought that would pose as a trade off... The Ram air hoods for Camero SS's and TransAm's seem to do wonders compared to the Z28 and the formula... or so i thought.

Im not so sure a ram air hood would necisarily weigh down a vehicle... I would think since most of them are made out of fiber glass they would weigh less but I may be mistaken...

The question would be for the GM cars, what if you took the cold air hood off and just put a good K&N cold air pack and flat hood on. Would you really lose any power, or does the bulk of the gains come from somewhere else like different engine programming?

The only sure fire way to prove any of this is to get some guys ET's up here that run shaker hoods and compare them to K&N cold air intakes... I talked some guys at the R/T club meet that had shakers, previously having cold air intakes, They noticed they seemed to have more power due to the fact all of the air that was being pulled through the engine was comming directly from the outside. Thus, cooler than the air the K&N would be pulling through inside the engine compartment. But, like i said there is really no better way to prove it unless we can get some time's posted...

How about on a '96 Dakota? No fuel injection, 5.2l, so nobody sells a cold air kit for it. Would it be worth it for me to construct(or adapt) one of those boxes (like the K&N) to grab air from beside the radiator, house a filter and duct it to the Holley threw one of their pretty tubes? I think the look would be great. It wouldn't be RAM but it would be cooler. Any ideas?

Well the K&N draws it from the engine compartment which really heats up under my hood. But if someone has been driving around awhile you'll notice your hood can warm up pretty good. Even if cold air is being drawn from outside the duct the air passes through which is inside the engine compartment is still gonna be warmed as its passing through from the heated hood right? Or am I just thinkin too much haha.

well...... a good ram hood should have the scoops right next to the tb, not chasing around in the hood like some kits. Also a consideration is thermal covering for the inside of your hood but that can get really gaudy really quick. I personally got thermal covering just around my "air tray" that mates up to the hood and notice really nothing on the a$$ dyno.
Heres another question. my hood scoop interior is just unfinished fiberglass. meaning its just laid ...no sanded smooth. Was thinking about sanding it smooth for air flow reasons (and maybe show points!) I was thinking in the lines of how everyone is port n polishing tis and tat. waste or do it?

does make a difference. I think the ram air
effect is very negligibe. But having outside air
sitting directly over the throttle body, is about
the most effective system, short of a turbo or
s/c.

And non intercooled T/C and S/C applications actually have a higher inlet air temp due to increased airflow. Once and intercooler is used, the inlet charge drops rapidly and huge amounts of power can be gained.
