 Subject: "Haunted" Throttle

Lately my 2000 4.7 Dakota's throttle has been sticking or even increasing during light driving in 1st-3rd gears. The truck will let off the throttle if I push in the clutch, otherwise I have to ride the brake until it stalls. To add to the mystery, there is no pattern to the occurances, and some times the problem will go away by itself. This problem doesn't happen during highway driving. It seems completly electronic, as it ceases for a while if I reset the computer. I have also dissasembled the throttle body and nothing physically seems wrong. My guess is that the Idle Air Control Motor (IAC) is bad and letting air bypass the throttle blade. Also, this problem appeared after the dealer reprogramed my PCM under TSB 18-001-00. Now the kicker is that I just moved to an island in southeast Alaska and the nearest dealer is in Juneau, two ferry trips away. If anyone can help me out, it would be great. The workshop manual doesn't address this problem and the truck isn't giving abnormal codes.

Well if your problems didn't start till after the dealer did what they did to your computer. Then I would look at your computer and make sure all the wires are pluged in that are suppost to be. Also I would check for pinched wires around that area too. Because all it takes is one of the wires to ground out and all kinds of strange stuff will start to happen.
Finally if still can't find nothing.....
Start from the Battery make sure all the connections are clean and tight, and make sure all your Ground Wires both inside the engine conpartment and in the Cab of the Truck are clean and tight IE no Paint between the nut and the metal.
Still nothing I would take it back to the dealer and tell them what it's doing.

(MJR) I have a few observations....
1) You say you just moved to Alaska.... perhaps you have not allowed enough time for your computer to adjust to the envronment. You say you have the 2000 Dakota shop manual... read all about the extensive learning process with memory-locations for specific envronmental conditions that are constantly 'programmed' as those conditions are encounterd each time.(Every time you "reset the computer"... it has to start all over again.)
2)Have you pulled the IAC and cleaned it (and the cavity it goes into)? My 2000 4.7L has one electrical connector and 2 torx screws... the IAC comes right off. After cleaning my IAC, I start my Dak and the idle gets VERY high (2,500 RPM)for about 30 seconds... then it very slowly sneaks down to a normal idle speed over the next minute or so.DO NOT DRIVE DURING THIS RE_PROGRAMMING PROCESS!!!
3) Have you tried the "insta-learn" process? (first described by myself the very first winter I ran my Dak due to idle problems) Every time the outside tempartures changed more than 40 degrees (almost every 2 days) my Dak would idle poorly. Using my knowledge of computer-algorythims and the Daks learning capabilities, I was able to quickly 'teach' my Dak how to idle instead of waiting for days of driving for it to learn.

To reply to your observations:
1. The last time I reset the PCM was roughly three weeks ago, so it has had time to ajust to the climate.
2. Last weekend I pulled the throttle body and cleaned and inspected the components, including the IAC motor.
3. I live in southeast Alaska, thanks to the maritine climate, it has been in the upper 50's since I've been here. Added to this, my Dakota idles just fine, and it always has.
