Subject: Electric Fans For 5.2

Anyone know of a kit to install Electric cooling fans on the 97-99 Daks? A lot of power loss comes from the stupid Mechanical fan, especially with the A/C making the engine hot!I saw an article in 4-wheel mag about a kit of chevys-- Seems to run about 30 degrees cooler and has a manual override switch.

The Black Magic 150 from Flex-a-lite is the fan to go with for the 5.2.I have one it made my gas milage go up 2mpg ,the power gain is about 10hp and the gain is at all rpms.I have not run it in the summer yet it only got to about 80 after the install but it pulls alot of air . I will install an oil coller by next summer but I don't think I need to.10hp and 2mpg for $200 is a great deal.

The fan comes with everything you need to install : fan, brackets ,shroud, wire, themstat,ac relay. As far as install goes , http://www.flex-a-lite.com/auto/blackmag.htm , there is a link to instructions on that page.

Thanks for the info. I have heard this is the fan to get, but was a little concerned about over heating with the A/C on. Have you had any problems?

I have a 5.2 auto with AC and alot of bolt-ons , it makes about 300hp. After the install it was warm (80) for a few days and I drove the truck in stop and go traffic with the AC on , the water temp never rose.If you drive in heavy stop and go trafic on a 110 degree day with a 5000lb trailer and the ac on it might get hot , but so would the stock setup.

How do you take the stock clutch fan off?
All I see is a big nut between the pulley and the clutch fan.

With the belt still on , put a bar across the pulley bolts to keep it from spining and loosen that big nut.A 3' long 1" x 1" angle iron works well.

The pressed on pully requires a special tool, but a 1 7/16 wrench and a hammer works.

I have the Black Magic on my 98 5.2 also, also got 2 more mpg, and hp. I don't know if it will handle the Atlanta heat with the a/c on, but I have decided that I will run the clutch fan in hot weather if I have too and then put the BM back on when Fall hits..it just makes such a difference in power, its worth it. The Black Magic is the ONLY one that will handle a 5.2

I used two fans - a stock 00 4.7 electric fan and a small fan between (flexalite I think without going out and looking) the condensor and rad. Never overheated even pulling a trailor to in and from florida in the summer. Had it set to turn on at 210 (adjustable) and off at 195-200 (195 stat). Worked great, in fact the setup is for sale since I now have a 01 QC 5.9 and only use the stock electric only. Paid $300 will sell for $100 plus ship. Setup for external relays instead of just using the temp box.
Small fan came on with a/c and large fan at temp. Only really funny looking part was the homemade nylon brackets to bolt the big fan to the rad.

Aaro: do you have a part number for that black magic? I could use one of those. also, what kind of bolt ons do you have to make 300hp? I've wanted to make roughly that kind of power and dont really know what my options are.. (thought about building an R/T 360 for it, but 300hp from my 318 would be nice) Thanks

well considering the 5.2 is 230hp stock, and to get a supercharger to make 70hp(that costs $3k) thats a tad overkill, dont you think? www.moparts.com had quite a bit of parts, I just dont know what combonation I need to make the power I want. forced induction isnt really an something I want.

a SC will get you anywhere from 40-50% more hp. on a 230hp truck you will get up to 115hp. you also HAVE to do other mods as well, like headers, 180 t-stat, plugs, cat back. which will add to the it.

to get to 300hp normaly asporated, you will probably need

cold air intake, TB, 1.7 RR's (and, or cam), M-1 intake, MP pcm, headers, and cat back.

Yes, I tried a perma lite fan and sent it back to Summit as a trade in for my Black Magic. The Perma Cool and the Imperial cannot handle the 5.2, so far only the Black Magic works.

,engine mods are as follows ,K&N fipk with S&B 9" filter, JBA headers , ported 52mm TB ,Ultra-flow cat back , underdrive pullies ,Mopar PCM ,Black magic 150 electric fan , MSD coil , 3923 plugs , extreme 9000 wires , brass cap and rotor ,IAT adjuster ......300hp is a guess with a low 14sec 1/4 time 3,800lbs(SB,RC) and an auto trans . Heads and a mild cam can get another 40-50hp.The underdrive pullies and electric fan are good because the engine isn't forced to make more power it just uses less to run ,a V8 uses about 50hp to idle and alot more at 5,000 rpm . Flex-a-lite part #150 ,JEG's or Summit has the fan.
