 Subject: 4.7 liter performance and mileage help

I just put 265/75/16 tires on my 2004 quad cab 4.7
liter Dakota and I've noticed some power and
mileage losses which are to be expected when
switching from the stock 245/70's that were on
there. What is the best way to recoup some of the
lost power and mileage. I'm most worried about
the mileage. I don't tow much at all and my
commute is on laid back country roads, so I'm most
concerned with getting the best MPG possible.
Would a computer chip help any? If so, what are
the best ones? JET, Superchip, etc. Also would
going to a K&N filter and new exhaust help any?

just my opinion, but on my 2000 4.7 liter I made a few changes (k/n air filter and tonnue bed cover)and really did not see any change in mpg. The best thing you can do is keep it running good and tuned up and check your tire psi regularly. I personally feel for all the extras and cost for upgrades it is not going to save you much at all in gas savings.

It's those tires that's got your mileage down, and the only way to compensate is to change your differential ratio.
Assuming you have a 4x4 and 3.55 gears, those new tires have effectively given you a ratio of 3.31.
Switch to 4.10 gears, but unless you're gonna keep it for at least another decade, you'll never make up the cost of the diff gear swap in gas savings.
For now, watch your speed. Your speedometer will indicate 56 when you're actually doing 60.
