I'm thinking of hauling about 1400 lbs. in my bed and pulling another 2500 lbs in a trailer with my 01 QC V8. It doesn't have the factory tow package but has a class III hitch. Can this truck handle it? It's a 1800 mile round trip.

Either v8 for that year QC would pull the load, preferably with a transmission cooler. But it sounds like you are planning to put too much weight in the back of the truck. You should plan to reposition most of that load to the trailer. Remember to consider the tongue weight of the trailer as part of the load on the back of the truck.

My dilema is whether to install the wiring for trailer brakes/controller and pull a big car hauler that weighs 1500 lbs alone + the four motorcycles at around 2700 lbs on top of that. OR do the smaller trailer with the two bikes in bed and two in trailer.
The trailer brakes are a money issue. If it wasn't I would pull the car hauler anyday.

get a tranny cooler. perferably one of the big rv sized ones. your tranny will last alot longer with just that cooler.

If you're sure you have the weight right, it's way to much weight in the rear of your truck - like I said before. What is the actual weight of each bike ? I have a hard time believing you could fit 2 650 lb bikes in the rear of a QC; having owned bikes that heavy. You have the $$$ for a 4 motorcycle 1800 mile round trip, but can't afford a brake controler ? C'mon now...

All dakotas have trans coolers on them (autos). Just hook up and pull it. All of you are putting to much into it.

Kowalski, I've got the weight correct. They are Harley's and are at at least 600 lbs dry weight. I've got a buddy that put two harley's in the back of his 98 club cab (not quad) and pulled one bike on a trailer. This was in a 6 cylinder with 80k miles on it. It had a bit longer bed but I plan to add extra support to the tailgate.

Then you need a new plan. I assume we are only talking about Sportsters here, or the weight would be higher. Stil, you are considering cantilevering the weight backwards, which will compound the problem. Disregard the Teaxas Todd posts; it's really someone spoofing him to annoy people.
