I hear alot about the 4.7's, how about the 5.9 ?
I want to hear from the 5.9 people.
Am I the only one ????
I need to hear from people who have a 5.9 dak, and who hot rod them.
Hope to hear from u soon.
any info on other sites on the 5.9 dak, would be nice.

I understand that the 5.9 is much simpler to build up. 4.7 is still a good motor, but that is not my interest.
I want to connect with 5.9 owners.
This site seems to be filled with 4.7 owners.
I do not intend to dis 4.7, anyway thanks for the reply.

Don't see much talk about the 5.9's for a couple of reasons. They're pretty durable - not much goes wrong with them. And when it does, it's usually pretty simple.

I bought my truck to be a truck. Although I've made a few simple change to improve power, it's not hot rodded by any stretch of the imagination.

It's a truck motor by design. It makes excellent low end torque, and will pull a trailer all day long without breathing hard. But the only time it goes to the race track is when it's towing my track car.

It's a 4 wheel drive beast of burden. It goes everyhwere I want it to, regardless of the weather. It's never let me down. It has carried everything I have loaded on it, from my grand kids to 1/2 ton of rock.

It's an excellent truck. IMO, there isn't anything better available on any dealer lot. But it's a terrible hot rod.

Truck motor by design? Tell that to owners of the 340 Magnum, aka, "Baby Hemi". It received this name, not for having Hemi heads, but for the way it ran (late 60's era). A very conservative 275hp rating with a 4bbl and 6,000 rpm reliable. That's not a truck engine, per se. Personally, I don't see the 5.7 and 6.1 Hemis as "truck engines" either. The 360 never got the factory treatment for performance like the 340 did thanks to bad timing with early emissions laws and the fuel crisis (the 360 Magnum was set up for trucks because that's the only place they could use them, so yeah, they emphasized low rpm power, but by design? The 360 came in to replace the 340. The 360 had a longer stroke to help compensate for the loss of power from decreased compression, etc. The 360 became more popular as a truck engine as the 400 and 440's were phased out. Eventually, it was the biggest option til the whole Magnum remake and the V10 came online.), but it's every bit as hotrod-able and durable as the 340. Take a look at the original LA engine from which the 318, 340, and 360 were derived, the 273. It really wasn't originally designed as a truck engine.

mjkblade, 5.9er here. My sentimental favorite is the 318, but I had the chance a while back to get a 5.9 Magnum and swapped it with the original 318 in my '89 Shelby Dakota. Naturally, it's not stock, but not terribly radical either. M1 intake, hot cam, 750 AFB carb, Mopar Performance ignition, single 3-inch exhaust, PATC Viper Level 2 A518 tranny, and 3.90 gears. That's all you really need for a low-13's gen 1.

Yes. By design, my 5.9 Dakota engine is a truck motor. Look at the cam, heads, and intake. All designed for low rpm torque, not high rpm hp. Does it pretty well, too.

Pointless comparison. But interesting history lesson. There's a lot more to the engine design than the short block and rotating assembly. Those probably has the least impact on engine performance charectoristics.

The net cam specs for the 360 Magnum are the same as the 360 LA. Note "net" cam specs. Both engines have .410" gross valve lift and short duration. Those cam specs came from the low-compression early emissions era, not from some engineers truck engine wish box. The head ports are the same size, and simply a further evolution of the original 340 heads. In fact, the 340 "X" heads and the Magnum heads are within 5hp at 6,000 rpm (that's directly from Mopar's own performance manual). The Magnum heads are more efficient (they flow better with smaller valves), but almost all of the efficiency improvements were incorporated into the last of the LA heads. The MPI barrel intake is a torquey design, with the same goals in mind as the carb-style dual-plane intake. Aside from the intake change, the "design" is remarkably unchanged, despite the hype.
Pointless comparison? They're the same family of engines. The 360 inherited the 340 heads and intake. Put the 340 Magnum cam in, and it's a whole other animal. The 360 is essentially a 340 stroker, slightly smaller bore.
The shortblock is the heart of the engine. Take two identical blocks with different heads, and that's what you have, the same engine (design) with different heads. Take two different blocks with the same design heads, and you have two different engine designs with the same heads. As stated, the Magnum heads are modestly evolved from the last of the 360LA heads. You could make the same torque numbers with an MPI-modified LA dual plane intake. That barrel intake was more for new industrial patents that anything else. Is it any coincidence that Edelbrock couldn't start selling heads and intakes for the Magnum til Mopar was shutting down production? If I swap intake and cam, does that mean I've re-designed the engine? That's a bit of a stretch.
The design thing is the hanging issue, and I doubt it'll be agreed on, but the LA engine was designed to fit requirements for the smaller cars. There were even plans for an aluminum version....that reeks performance, not for truck use. The fact that it also worked well as a truck engine is nothing special. Any engine with mild cam specs will make good low rpm torque. My 1340 Harley engine makes great low rpm power thanks to a short duration cam, but it isn't a truck engine by design.

I wouldn't.

You're saying you'll be happy if your engine makes 408 hp? That means about 350'ish hp to the ground. That's pretty poor. I have a NA engine that makes about 1.2 hp/cube.

A reasonably built blown motor with pump gas levels of boost should make 1.3 hp/cube. You should be able to put 450'ish hp to the ground. Depending on the quality of your tune and build, of course.

I have not really thought how much blown power is streetable, times being what they are.
I guess MPG is not really an issue, conisdering that it costs me around $100.00 for gas and octane booster. I hate when my 5.9 goes PING PING.
I had a few vegas with 350's at a horse per inch. It was fun.....but this mopar runs harder.
Second gear screams. Not much top end, some, but,
it is not really set up for topend anyway.
Depending on the amount money I can squeese out of my life, MORE HORSEPOWER should come soon.

I own a 2003 5.9 R/T and would like to say the 5.9 is a blast, however for a 5.9 it dont seem as power as it should, does any on have any good tips (inexpensive) to get this baby really fast?
