Subject: Turbo a 5.2L?
IP: Logged

Message:
So I'm dropping in a 5.2 in my 00 CC 4X4 and was wondering how hard it would be to find a turbo and stuff it in somehow. Any ideas or suggestions or parts that would work?

STS makes a turbo kit for almost anything. The turbo mounts a the rear were the muffler would be.So there is no special exhaust headers needed.Go to their web sit. They have some video footage of different vehicles.Horse Power TV installed a kit on the new Z06 Vette. They were very impressed.Check it out.

I ditto that! You got to have DEEP pockets for an STS system!

You are either stuck paying BIG BIG BUCKS for a bolt on for a Dakota, or buy the bare turbo parts and fabricate it yourself. It's about $1,000 for the initial turbo install if you do it yourself. Once you play with fuel managment it would add up a little bit more.

I know that there was a turbo kit floating around on Ebay for the 4.7s. I think that would be something to have.

graphite, hypethically if i put a turbo on my 93 cc v8 4x4 auto, how would i go about the computer modification on the obd1? would i need new injectors? and how possible is it to modify a turbo from something else, say the old trans-am's with the 301 turbo to fit on the exhaust of my dakota.

I have yet to Turbo MY Dakota. But we did to the bro in laws 318 Ram. At least we know what NOT to do!

1st of all is do NOT listen to AMP Motorsports (as seen running Mustangs on Pinks!) cuz they sold him 39# injectors for his DODGE but DOdge is tuned totally different than Mustangs!
Using a fuel pressure controller to try and lower the pressure when not in boost. It was impossible to tune!

WHen I do mine I will just use all stock injectors and controlling. And just add fuel with extra injectors. I have almost got my controller working good enough for that as I am fuel injecting some other things with home made controller, etc...

You will have to talk to some people liek intense who have used FMU's to control extra fuel under boost.
All I can really share form my experiences so far is you can buy Turbo units for no more than $500 and fabricate the piping yourself and save lots!

I know a guy that has put turbos on several different engines. All his own stuff and refuses to do it for others. They all seem to work great. Puts them on engines from older 4 banger jeeps for hill climbing to V8's. He gets them out of the junkyards so there is no particular type other then to get one that was on a somewhat comparable engine size wise. I've never tried but seems it can't be all that tough.

Unfortunalty because dodge doesn't like to share with the aftermarket world, only a small handfull of people can tune the stock PCM's for these trucks.

I think that its safe to say that the best way to tune any fuel injected engine is to use a standalone computer.

That being said, I like the Digital FMU that came with the procharger setup. You could buy just the FMU and fuel pump to control fuel, and then some type of ignition box that has boost reference. That should allow you to get good tuning for moderate boost levels.

so, i have a 00 dodge ram with the 5.2L

i want to turbo it. im going to put it all togather. Probably make a exhaust manifold/turbo mount out of steel, and put it where my factory fan currently is. Im told that i need to do something to the map sensor, because they dont like positive pressure (apparently they are only for vaccum). Im not planning on changing anything for fuel or computer tuning. I hope it will automatically do it for me. im thinking somewhere from 3 to 6psi boost.

any suggestions, or problems i should think of before i start to do it?

the turbo i have is off a 4cyl dodge car. Im thinking of only running it off of one bank of the engine (so it wont restrict my exhaust).
and, im not going to run an intercooler, just ram it in!.

I think you should do a little research before you start slamming stuff in there..

i have done some research, but i've never done this before. I know some ignition retarding will happen with the TPS (im counting on this). The map will be the big problem i think. As soon as it goes to positive pressure then the sensor is out of range, i dont know what to do about that. I think it will go lean and maybe start to ping. I would probably put an inline high pressure fuel pump to get a little more fuel in there.

and the oil line from the turbo, im planning on just dumping that into a valve cover.

First of all. Running a single turbo off of one bank (off of a small car) Will not produce any boost for you. All you will do Is increase your manifold vacuum (because of the restriction it will cause) If by some act of god it does create boost Your ignition retarding wont come until that thing is already knocking.. Wich wont stop. You will be knocking/pinging because you are way to lean. Putting in a high pressure fuel pump will also not help. Your stock regulator will just allow the extra fuel to bypass back to the tank.
Also, Dont dump the oil into a valve cover.. Im assuming your turbo will be below that level and you would have to plum the line Upward into cover.
Sounds like You are planning on building a grenade.. And thats about it..
Here is an Idea. Buy a Vortech FMU, A timing boost retard from MSD. and find a good used turbo from say a 6.5 diesel and run it off of both banks. This should make it pretty safe for you to run 4-6psi.

I'm going to attempt to turbo charge my 2000R/T. I have a Super T-70 turbo, blow off valve, and wastegate (bought new in box,(never installed)$250), I also already have an Accell 300+ digital ignition system with a 375+ controller. All I need now is a 3-bar MAP sensor to read boost and I'll have the timing issue fixed. For fuel I am going to use a Paxta-Map fueler, that I have from a SN 93 setup for a 96 Dak. Fuel issue solved. Also I am going to get an electric oil pump (placed on the return side of the turbo) to pump the oil back to the engine. I plan on replacing my muffler with the turbo, Ala STS system.
Question, should I avoid plumbing the oil return into the valve cover, and also I have zero experience tuning a turbo setup. I'd hate like mad to grenade my engine.(My truck only has 26,000 KM (That's about 17,000 miles on it)).
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

does this 3 bar map sensor plug into that accel 300+ ignition system?

what is this paxta map fueler?

generally pumps last longer if they are pushing fluid instead of pulling fluid. If you use medal lines they will act as an oil cooler at the same time
