Subject: 5.9 w/no compression #3

Hi guys - Just bought an Ebay project last night - '99 Durango SLT(I know,I know!)with the 5.9L. Ebay Item# 120054042811 It needs motor work - apparently has no compression on #3 cylinder. The ad states it is very hard to start and if it starts it will barely run. Just looking for some gut feelings here. I guess that I'm hoping a head gasket or valve problem vs. piston/shortblock problem. Or maybe it skipped time and bent a valve? Obviously I'll have to wait until I have the truck to dig in and figure it out.

uh clint282cc, yes you can jump/skip timing on a pushrod motor.

Steve, if compression is non-existent in that number 3, i think your best bet is pull the head and see what's going on in there. if it was just low, i may try a compression check first.

you may want to do that to all cylinders anyway before you get started.

Definitely a compression check on each just to get a baseline. Then I'll pull the valve cover and check for excessive lash/clearance on #3 rockers. Probably check harmonic balancer position and compare it to dist rotor position for #1. Then I'll pull that head. That's my plan anyways. I have 2 other projects ahead of it though.... might just be a bit. I'll let you know what I find. Thanks,

Its just a head gasket. the guy probably overheated it. The FIRST thing you need to go do, is get some liquid BLOCK from the parts store(advance auto/schucks). what that will do, is if you have a hole in the head gasket, it will plug it. i did that to my car, cause my dumbazz ex overheated it on purpose and blew the head gasket. After i put the liquid block in, i drove it like that for a long time. Follow the directions exactly or it wont work though.

Update so far. Got the truck yesterday. Popped out the plugs to do compression check but the battery was dead. I put the charger on the battery, then proceeded to remove LH valve cover. Found #3 intake valve dropped, broken spring, bent pushrod, keepers at base of spring. I haven't checked timing yet, but I'd say it skipped some teeth. I'm really hoping the piston is still good. My plan is still to check distrib rotor position relative to #1 & check compr. Pull the LH head and see what I've got. Probably pull the front off the motor too.
Can anyone figure what other valve(s) would be open at the same time as #3 intake. I suppose pulling the other valve cover and the compression test will tell me if the RH side is good.

so much for jayb's asessment of the situation.
if it dropped the valve i seriously doubt the piston or cylinder walll on that #3 will be good. but who knows. you may have got lucky.

i would pop that dist cap and see where #1 is. you may not have jumped time and just dropped that valve. the valve spring could have been fatigued or the previous owner could have over revved one too many times. that's why they put rev limiters. the stock valvetrain can only go so far before it will let loose of something.

I was considering that too (fatigued spring). But the pushrod is bent pretty good ie=collision of some sort. The valve is dropped with about 1" of the stem above the seal. I wish I had a borescope! to check #3 right now.

So it's probably gonna end up being: pull intake, then head and replace valve (hope heads not cracked), pull front & replace timing set, maybe replace one piston, reassemble and hope it's good. OR, swap motor with used.

I'm going to start with compression test on all, then verify timing, then start the disassembly.

you might want to verify timing first. just in case. if it did jump far enough spinning the motor for the comp test may cause more unnecessary damage.

The broken valve spring appears to be the culprit. If timing jumped, you would have more than one bent pushrod for sure. Get an adaptor, screw it into the spark plug hole for that cylinder and hook it to an air compressor. Then you can change the broken valve spring and bent pushrod. You may get lucky and not have to pull the head. It may not have bent the valve or put a hole in the top of the piston. Those 5.9’s are pretty tough.

clint282cc, you're probably right when it comes to vlave timing, mosts of us don't have any knowledge about that. On the hand, Srponies was referring to valve timing which is a totally different subject and doesn't require a "head gaskt leek" to skip.

Ok here goes for another update. I ended up pulling the LH head. Found the #3 intake valve bent and stuck and a couple of minor extra eyebrows created on the piston. The piston and cylinder are fine. Also pulled the other head and the front off the motor. Basically stripped it down to the shortblock. The timing chain is really loose - but alignment is fine. So, I'm replacing the broken valvetrain parts, getting a valvejob, then putting it back together with a HD timing set, new gaskets, plugs, fluids, filters and thermostat. Only other problem is 1 broken intake manifold bolt in each head. Just dropped the heads off today, so it'll wait until next week. Thanks all,

also consider an overrev and valve bounce...i shot pushrods through rocker arms all the time in my LA 318 cause i was too cheap to buy a rev chip for my 6AL...

Update today... Got the heads back from the machine shop Friday. Had a valve job done and new seals installed. I installed the HD timing set, timing cover, balancer and water pump. Also installed both heads and the intake manifold. One exh. manifold is installed. Still need to do the other exh. manifold, the rocker arms, valve covers, distrib, and all wiring & fluids. A few more hours and I should be ready to fire it up.

Actually you can skip valve timing, not that hard really. If the timing chain skips more than 2-3 teeth you will bend valves. Been there done that.
