How does a dakota become the next generation? I have a 98 sport 5.2L. Was gen 3 created with the 2005, or when the 4.7L was introduced?

The generations usually refer to the significant body styles. I don't have the years to give you, but they can be described as follows:
Gen I original style with flat front
Gen II rounded front, like the 1994
Gen III baby Ram, like my 2004
Gen IV absolutely butt-ugly, 2005 and up

Difference between the Gen 1 and Gen 2 is when they switched to the Magnum motors right? Your '00 4.7 is still the Gen 3

gen 3 stars 97 to 05.
and i think those new daks look good... untill you get to the front of it!! i hate the front end. but as for the rear.... daaaaaamn it looks tuff.

Mopar calls the oldest boxier style all gen one; but Dak enthusiasts tend to call the boxier style gen 2 starting with the first year it was available with a v8. This is why there is some confusion - Mopar considers the latest style gen 3; while most of us consider it gen 4.

DEGENERATION XXXXXXX!!!!!!!!!
The new generation definately needs a better face. other than that, Clint's philosiphy is dead on about the rear. The only other thing I would change is to move the defrost vent that is STILL in the top-center of the console. "Now that's what I call german engineering."
Maybe if we complain enough about the front end, they'll change it in '07. As Lemmy Motorhead once said - "IT'S TIME TO PLAY, IT'S TIME TO PLAY THE GAME!!!!!!"
