Hey everyone... I think that I might trade in my truck. There is a 2002 Ram 1500 with low miles at the dealership. It has the 5.9 (245hp/330ftlbs). It is black with a regular cab,2wd, 20 inch rims, spray in bed liner, every option available. It is only 17,995. So I think I am going to do it...

Does anyone know how fast this 5.9 is in the new body style rams?

Any input is appreciated!

A Ram will be much heavier than a Dakota. Look for a Ram website and see what info you can find.

Well obviously a Ram is heavier than a Dakota.... I just figured that I would come on the Dak website since I do STILL have my dakota. I just wanted to see what fellow members though about this.

depends on what you plan on using the truck for, If you are wanting a street truck, stick with a dakota and get the 5.9 R/T, if you are wanting to do some heavy hauling, sure get the ram.

if you are concerned about Gas Mileage a RAM isn't what you are looking for.

If you are trying to get your bling bling on, yea the RAM is what you need cause of the oversized wheels, and Gas Mileage Hoggers.

But really if you was wanting a real truck, you would consider a 4x4, whats the point in having a truck if it's not 4x4 really.

Well first of all my Dak gets 13mpg.....The Ram is supposed to get 12mpg. So there is no real difference for me. One thing that I like is that it is bigger. My Reg Cab Dakota is pretty small and I would love a bigger truck. Another thing is that I wouldnt be able to afford a 4x4... This ram is in my price range. I heard that this truck that I am looking at getting is supposed to run high 15's @ about 90mph. With a few mods that should be high 14's. I think it is a pretty good deal for a 19yr old...

My Ram 1500 regular cab long bed (2001) weighs a little over 4,000. Not much more than a Dakota. Gas mileage is similar. My truck gets an average 19 mpg with the 3.9 and a 5 speed. It will easily do 21 on a trip. Best mpg was 22, worst 16.

5.9 is a gas hog. Wait till summer when gas gets real high and you can buy it cheap.

I'd personally go for it if you didn't want anything bigger than a regular cab... The last 02 or 03 I rode in was the new 4 door design and it rode better than any other truck I had been in in a while... The only real concern I say with it was while we were going down hill, on like a 7% grade, allthough we were getting 80mpg the rotors would kinda grab like they were a little on the cheap side and were starting to warp a little... AVG mpg on flat ground was around 14-18 mpg... While going up the very same mountain listed above we got an average of 6-7 mpg... So as long as your going downhill all the time or on fairly flat ground you shouldn't have any problems in this area much... Not sure about the gear ratio but it was an auto and seemed to shift allright... Never really jerked or anything, and it would take off just about as if you were in a 318 dakota only slightly better... Pulls good on hillsides and seemed to run extremely quite and smooth compared to the 3.9l dakota :)) The one I was in was also a 4x4 so you might even get better mpg if your a little light on the ol right foot ; ))

Lol thanks greg. I think I am going to do it. I am going to the dealership tonight to see what they can do. They appraised my 97 Dak at $5,000. So that is a good thing ;-) I did persuade the salesman a couple of nights ago to let me take the truck for the whole night and most of the next day. I had it about 24 hours... I LOVED how it rode and especially how it looked. It is a pretty smooth ride and I liked it a lot! I'll keep you updated!!
