I have a '98 v6 3.9. Have Airaid filter, Autolite 3923's, Napa cap & rotor, Taylor 8mm wires, Flowmaster 40 series delta flow and Superchips power programmer. I just had my flowmaster muffler installed about 2-3 weeks ago and have driven it about 400-500 miles since then. My gas milage has dropped to about 19.8 MPG (but it's more like 20.3 after doing the math at the pump, computer seems to be off here). Before I got my flowmaster i was geting about 20.5 (or actually 21 with taking milage and dividing gallons). Why would this happen. I installed my new rotor and cap and wires the day after my exhaust. the computer has had time to relearn it, but why the loss on MPG? There was a definate power gain after that. I last had injector clearn about 2,500 miles or so ago. Time for more? (I know about every 3K-5k) This just has me puzzled why I am getting about 1MPG less now rather than before. Any Ideas? Thanks for the help in advance. Also an estimate on about how much HP and Torque I have now after these mods/adjustments? Thanks again.

The loss in MPG.....lay off the gas. LOL. Perhaps the more power going to your head? or foot?

That is such a small differance, anything could do it. Even the weather. Average it out over the next few months and it should average higher, just don't get on the pedal too much.

welcome to my world matt. you have alot of the same mods i do. My milage dropped alot, especially after the v8 TB. Maybe youp poor mpg numbers (good for a truck though) could be caused by trompitus. more mods= heavier right foot lol.

seriously though, maybe the increased flow makes the engine "breathe" deeper. thus taking more fuel and making more power.


i have no clue on the rwhp either. my goas is to have at least 175 rwhp (thats the crank rating from the factory) so i can make up for the loss of the driveline (auto tranny). i think i "might" have 190 rwhp i have never had it on a dyno. i would prolly get laughed at by the guys running the dyno lol. long live the 3.9!!!!!

btw: is the superchips programmer worth it?

I have the same mods as you with the exception of the Super Chips.

I get between 18-20mpg doing the same drive week after week. One week I'll think that I'll get 20mpg and thats when I get 18mpg, the next week vice versa happens.

So thats a 2mpg difference on the same drive, with the same habits, doing the same speed (cruise @ 65mph).

Air temp, head wind, humidity and just a couple of WOT blasts up the on-ramps will make all the difference.

Your mpg is as good as we can expect from a 4,000lb, under powered truck.

P.S. Try the Bosch Platinum +4's #4417, that will help your mpg, and give better throttle response than the over-hyped 3923's. I have 1st hand experience with this!!

Thanks for all the help. As for the heavy foot? I actually don't have one. Well I do but don't use that one, I try to just take it easy and actually put it on cruise whenever I can. I mostly drive Highway miles, but some around town when Im home from college. I'm anywhere from 55-70 (whatever the speedlimit is)about 70 most of the time though. I guess that about 20 MPG for 70 MPH is pretty good.
As for the SuperChips power programmer. I'm inbetween on that one. If you can get a cheap one, go for it, but after plenty of Mods. I did it after intake, so didn't get much, but can tell a Torque increase. If you have the money, go for it, but if you have other things in mind, do those first and then the programmer. You should get a better responce doing that.

Daffy, what kind of Throttle body do you have? I'm looking at getting one, but have not decided what to get. I still have time before I do it, but just wanted to hear some opinions from people. It sounds like you have a V8 Body off of a 5.9 or something. How much was it, if i may ask? Im between a V8 throttle body or one from KRC or something. I know that a V8 would be cheaper, but what do you all that have one suggest? What cable is needed and part number on that?

I have the Fastman 46mm TB and it is a serious increase in both power and throttle response.

In terms of price it's right in the middle of the V8/throttle cable mod and The F&B billet TB.

Whats nice about the Fastman is it bolts right on with no other mods and Dan is a great guy to work with.

also i forgot to mention. i cut off the disc v8 linkage, drilled it out and put a holley ball stud in. viola no need for a v8 throttle cable!
