Subject: HEAD AND CAM QUESTION
IP: Logged

Message:
Allright I'm a little pissed right now :// Started cleaning my heads today and after an hour of sandblasting, we did the flux powder test for cracks, mainly due to unusual metal looks "as in it looked like it had been beaten up a little", and low and behold I've got a crack going right through the center of both valve seats down into the cooling system passage on the first cylinder on the passenger side looking back toward the cab of the truck... One freakin cylinder ruins everything!!! This just happens to be the one cylinder that had a black looking injector too, which might explain why it ran lean enough to overheat and crack on this one cylinder :(( I asked a parts place today and they said the only listing they had was up to the 95's and it was $250 for it with the core interchange... $350 without...

So my first question is would it be better to send this head off and have it remachined or just get a new head for my port and polish???

Second question is, Larry what kind of cam do you recommend running in this thing??? Stock 1.6 ratio rockers or go ahead with the 1.7's on top of the cam??? What kind of cam might you be running in yours right now??? Who did you get it from and about how much will one cost???

Sucks dude. Get a new head. You may have to do some looking. I've gone through 10 heads and seend cracks in every one. And I know other guys that have had the same experience.

Yes get a new or good used head from a bone yard
don't even mess with it.

Stay with the 1.6 if you are going aftermarket cam
but you will need to change out the springs
retainers and clips to something better

springs mopar R/T good for .525 lift and 6000 rpm
P5249464 About $85 for 12

P4876062 .480 to .600 lift about $96 a set of 12

Keepers hardens steel
P4529218 About $10 for a 16 set more if bought seporately

Retainers crome moly
P4452032 around $60 12 needed

I would also go with a new set of rollers they
are cheaper to buy a 16 set than to buy 12
seporate
P5249862 around $110 seporate for 12 $120

These are all mopar part #s local dealer or
http://www.mopartsracing.com/parts/ram.html

My cam was custom ground and is almost identical
to the Hughes HER1418AL-V6 1500 to 5800rpm
266/270 mine is 268/272 I had it made befor all
the aftermarket cams even exsisted it has less
lift than the huges but that will be changed
before my stroker goes back togather to .512/.512

http://www.hughesengines.com/cams/39v6cams.asp

the KRC200 is also a nice cam depending on how
hot you want to go will also need dif sprigs for
that it has a .504/.512 lift

take a look at Hughes and see where you want to
run you rpms they have a good chart lower on the
page

Thank you once again Larry... Here's what I've come to with my head situation---

Redone through Tn --- $200
Advance redone head with core --- $250
Brand new through Dodge --- $300

I thinks, I'm just going to get new through Dodge ; ))

Allright, now to the cam... What do you think about these ---

new cam key "of course never trust old" $??
lifters #5006-12 $90
HER1418AL-V6 1500-5800 with regrind $197
#1102 .600 lift valve springs $76
#1276-12 retainers 5/16" $46.50
#1320 "A" case hardened machined steel valve locks "set of 32 pieces" $50

Allthough doubtfull, I may also go with the
HER0814AL-V6 idle-5500 simply because it's down to idle and I will probably never rev over 5500rpm's

So what do you think about this??? AND what is a good double roller timing chain out there for this engine, since I'll be into the timing case anyway:)) Oh yeh how about piston to valve face knock... Would I have anything to worry about with this cam setup with the 1.6rr's, shaved .020 heads, and .020 longer pushrods due to the head shave??? Do I have anything to worry about here???

Thanks Again,
Greg

How about SUM-G6603 from Summit Racing. $41.95 (timing gear/chain-true roller/double chain).
The head shave causing a net increase in pushrod length shouldn't be an issue at 5500 rpm. It'd add 2-300 rpm to top-end over 6 grand, but with a milder cam the lifters will absorb this.

Why would you want longer push rods with a shaved
head,

If you do that I would go with the 1.6 crower
rollers so you can adjust them or you may bottom
the lifters

you should also degree the cam you can get a set
of off set keys from mopar 0 to 5 degrees for
around $40 or summit has them also

Cloyes roller chain is what I use in these motors
it has a + - 4 degree keyway cut and with the
offset keys you can degree it in perfict and get
max performance.

http://www.dodgedakota.net/ home page how to's
I also expalined how to degree a cam

Yes I would go with the milder cam with thw stock
comp you will have a more usible power band

piston clearance will be fine

I'm sorry, I must have worded this all wrong... I was referring to the longer pushrods being resultant of the head shave... .020" head shave = to or around .020" longer pushrods for the same setup or rather non changed pushrods...

The roller timing chain I mentioned above has the + or - 4 degrees or I can get the better chain which has the +/-2, +/-4, +/-6, +/-8, +/-10 degree increments... These chains are suppost to be of better quality for more resistance to stress and what not, but we'll see how that goes...

So I would be better off with the one set milder cam over the more performance cam you listed, even with all the other mods I'm going to be doing??? What kind of computer upgrade do I need to look into for the better cam???

Thanks Again,
Greg

The only to find that out would be to call your local machine
