Subject: 1990 3.9 auto trans question

My grandfather has a 1990 dakota with the 3.9 and a auto trans. Lately its been making a noise in the tranny like bearings are going bad. the faster you go the louder it gets. is this a common problem with these trucks?
whats a rebult tranny cost for these? None of our salvage yards have a tranny.

Also we have another problem with the truck since he has had it.

when cold ot runs really bad. It spits out black smoke, hunts between overdrive and drive, surges and idles bad. We have replaced MANY parts on this truck to no avil.
We have replaced, wires,plugs,cap & rotor button, ecm, all the lifters, fuel filter, fuel pressure reg. what else could it be?

oh, btw the truck has 179k on it.

The first thing I always do with trans probs is
change the fluid and filter and go from there

Chrysler ATF +4
Amsoils universal synthetic will make it quiter
and shift smother.

In your manual they will recomend +3 but now
chrysler recomends the full synthetic +4 for
all the truck trans

Are you sure its not a wheel bearing whining

It also sounds like your engine temp sensor took
a crap, not the guage sending unit but the temp
sensor

There is also a trans temp sensor that can cause
O/D shift probs, located in left cooling line
near the radiator.

You need a digital volt meter and you can check
these sensors.
