Whenever I turn on my heat, I smell coolant/antifreeze. I'm thinking its the heater core, but any suggestions?

I agree that you may need to replace the heater core or you may have some other leak around the heater core.

"Hard" is such a relative term in here as some people think it is "hard" to change tranny fluid. I would say as a novice weekend mechanic that when I did mine on a 87 Camaro, I was two hours into it before I decided I would never do it again. Most definitely if you try it yourself get a chiltons/haynes, take your time, and label everything you take out (small ziplock baggies helped). You'll have to go in from under the dash and there are alot of nickel/dime connections to F$%# with.
Personnally, I buy the core from A-zone and take it to a radiator shop or independent mechanic.
Do some further troubleshoooting to make sure its the core. Is there coolant on the ground? In the oil? Is the coolant in the radiator look "normal" when you take the cap off? I just had a water pump blow on me and I could smell the coolant sometimes also (but had obvious leakage on ground).

there's been no leaks on the ground.... I can say that much.
Earlier though, the temperature kinda fluctuated slowly...
But I'd do it either way.
