I have a 1995 dodge dakota 3.9l v6. Just recently, we pulled the valve covers and the intake manifold and replaced the gaskets and such. Now, when I start the truck, and go to drive, it missfires and then stalls out (depending on the level of gas I give it). There are no check engine lights, and weve hooked a scanner up to it and cant find what would be causing the problem? THe problem ONLY occurs when the truck is cold. Once it reaches good temperature, I can floor the bad boy and itll take right off. Any advice would be appreciated.

I have a 95 3.9L as well. What scanner did you use?

have you checked for vacuum leaks? Checked the electrical connectors to IAC, MAP, TPS?

Checked the TPS? MAP sensor? Reference my post on backfiring while accelerating.

yea, i just found your post the other day. I havent gotten back out to doing more work on it yet. I think the scanner is an actron? something like that. my plan for the next time is to check for vaccum leaks

I'm looking for a scanner. One that does older pre OBDII as well as OBDII. I am looking at the actron CP9150 super autoscanner kit.

I have found only 2 that look good, autoxray and actron.

Check on snapon's scanners :)

They are both the same price. regular OBDII code readers are cheap, scanners are more pricey because they do more than just read / clear codes.

i am very satisified with the actron scanner. might have been expensive, but worth it. Also, it will work on the newer model cars we have as well. On the truck, I may have fixed it. I found (or dident find) a missing check valve in the vaccum system. the hose coming out of the MAP sensor splits and goes to the EVAP canister and into the intake manifold. The check valve on the hose going into the intake manifold was missing. After replacing it, I felt an immediate increase in power. I have to check it in the morning when it is truly cold and see if it actually works.

the handy little vaccum diagram under the hood showed it. what actually happened is we had put it on the wrong one (the climate contron/cruise control) vaccum hose. The bad news, even though performance has increased, the problem hasent been totally fixed. still misfires/stalls when its cold (and its worse the colder it is). Today i plan on checking the timing, distributor, spark plugs. so damn annoying.

I have a '98 v6 Dakota. I replaced the plugs wires, cap and button. It started having the same symptoms you have. I had it in the shop several times but they found nothing. Finally the check engine light came on and took it back in. They only replaced the oxygen sensors and it runs great again. One in front of the cat and one behind the cat. I thought that was what it was but didn't want to spend the money on them without being shure.
I should have replaced them sooner ( 3 months ago when it started )and would not have had all the problems with it running poorly!

i will check that if what i did today dosent work. last i drove it it was fine, but my truck only seems to have morning sickness (lol).
i was under the impressions that twisting the distributor cap had no affect on timing as it was computer controlled. but, today, i found it was a little loose, and while the engine was running (and not running) twisting the cap affected the timing pretty seriousley. I even attatched the timing light to check it out. I adjusted it to the optimal level, and ill see how she runs in the morning. Next step is to replace the distributor cap, rotor and all that fun stuff, the plugs and plug wires. Hope i find it soon, I am only on fall break and go back to school saturday (tommorow night!!!) (ill be back in a week for christmas break for a more extensive trouble shooting period should my current job not fix it!)

base timing is computer controlled. But you can advance / retard it by turning adjusting the distributor.

Do a search for injector synch. many people here have done that by adjusting the distributor.

well, still running good. woulda saved alot of troubleshooting time if that is the problem. thanks for all the feedback. im sure ill be back on in a week when i break it again. lol. but then, what fun is a car when it works all the time?

THE PROBLEM IS SOLVED. adjusting the distributor took care of the problem, no loss of power, no stalling, no missfire, just a great running engine!!!
