Subject: Coolant Leak- Timing Chain Cover
IP: Logged

Message:
My 2000 Dakota has a leak that is running down the right side of the timing chain cover to block gasket. Is this a common place for a coolant leak or could this be coming from another place and running down? Thanks for your help!

The most comon place to leak is the thermostat housing. other likely places are the bypass hose that is hidden by the manifold and it could be the water pump gasket leaking.

No one here can say for sure what your deal could be without seeing it, but one other thing to say is when the impellor seal blows, it will leak behind the pump pulley (feel for the weep hole) and drip onto the mainshaft pulley area. It could leak from the seal between the cover and the pump. The seal is made with a gasket and RTV. It must be fixed by removing the pump, remove all gasket material and use a solvent to clean the area. Run a bead of RTV, then seat the gasket into the RTV. Run a bead of RTV onto the pump mating surface and install. Good opportunity to consider replacing the timing chain, hoses, and belt(s). Generally, water pumps are reliable up to around 75-85,000 miles. Get a new one if you are in that area.
