Unfortunately you'd have to have your previous tint removed before you could do a flame job. The flames are cut and applied to the glass first, allowed to dry enough so it won't slide around, then you put a full sheet of regular tint behind it.

I was originally quoted $100 to do the two side windows, but gave in and paid $150 after the tint guy spent 6 hours designing and cutting my tribal flames by hand. Overall I'm happy with my design and boy does it ever turn heads, but to be honest there's a number of recommendations I'd pass along to anyone who wants to have it done:

1. Make sure the tint shop you're dealing with has done multi-layered tint in the past. I made sure I called every tint place in town before settling on the right one. There are special application 'rules' to multi-layer tints.

2. Have a graphic artist design your tint ahead of time on a computer, and have the flames 'printed' on a vinyl cutter. Mine was designed on the fly and cut by hand - I love the look but the tribal was a tad overdone for what I'd envisioned, and if you look really close in person you can tell it was done by hand.

3. Design your flames around the side mirror view. My tribal design swoops through the view to the side mirrors. And that's double-thick limo tint. It took a few weeks to get used to the view being muddled, and my night vision is completely shot when trying to see through the flamed portion. Leave about a 5" gap around the bottom corner (visually verify this from the inside) so a normal glance to your side mirrors is unblocked. Use regular tint on the side windows to back it unless you really want that deep black look.

I have links to a couple of window tint websites, the looks they've got going out there with multi-layer, multi-color tints is truly amazing.

Went to the local tint guy today to see if he could do this. He said I would have to design the flame myself and print it on a plotter so he could use it as a template to cut it out . He said the tint film is too flimsy for the vinyl letter guys to cut. He also said that there would be a white outline around the entire flame because of the second layer would not be able to make full contact to the window around the flame. Should I find a new tint guy or what I am in Canada and they say they haven't seen anything like that up here

I'm looking to do this too. I live in Edmonton. If you have any luck please tell me where. I haven't begun asking around yet.

He is correct about the outline, but it really isn't that noticeable (look at my pictures and see if you can tell it's there). I'm sure if you wanted to run around the edges with a file you could smooth it out for little/no outline but it really is no big deal. You'd have to be right up on the tint to see it, and personally I kinda like the outline, it provides a little bit of definition.

If you want to see some KILLER outlines, go to the following websites:

www.mikestintshop.com
www.glassgraphics909.com

I was tempted to have a thick outline done like 909 does (jigsaw tinting), but it would have cost considerably more.

Jon I'm gonna start drawing the flames in AutoCAD this week, I live in ontario so you probably would't be able to get it done by the same guy. The guy I talked to is the best tint guy around he does all the tinting for all the dealerships in the area. It would probably be a good idea to start asking around to find out who "the Man " is when I get the flames done I could probably send you the AutoCAD file

multi layer flame tint ?

like mine? :)

first is the silver layer, then the orange and last the black. the silver/orange layering was just enough to get a close color match to my amber fire paint. all hand cut.

i have little "portholes" in the tint to allow the sideview to show through mostly unobstructed.

tinting done by al's tinting, pearl city hawaii.
