Actually... it IS the cheap plastic gray one.
I took it off and had it painted at the same time as the grille that I bought. I didn't try to paint the "chrome" grille, cuz I'd heard that it's difficult to get the paint to stick. I used the DC paint shop - who better to get the color right?

I picked up the extra grille from eBay for $70.00, and the cost for painting it, as well as the front fascia AND the rear lower bumpers was $120.00. The chrome trim strips (Pep Boys) were $15.00. In turn, I sold my SLT grille for $125.00, so my total investment was $80.00.
I had the paint done at the Dodge dealer's paint shop... who better to get the color right?
I'm happy with the results. The SLT (with chrome upper bumpers, and chrome badges) was not available in Patriot Blue, and with these mods, I doubt that I'll see another Dakota that looks like mine.

did the rear lower bumper come in chrome?
I thought they did. I was thinking of either
painting the front fascia, or going with a
chrome smoothie bumper for the front.. what
do you think?

The SLT lower rear bumper trim pieces are molded in the same gray plastic as the front.
I've never seen the full chrome front bumper, but I think that it would be a little too much chrome - for me, anyway.
