Subject: Painting stock aluminium rims - how to?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hey all... I am still in the debate mode of a possible painting of my factory rims. I am curious to know 1) how much work am I getting myself into? 2) should I do it at all? 3) black or gunmetal grey? 4) what is the process i need to go through (start to finish) so they don't start to flake in a few weeks?

thanks muchly!

No actually, it's a 2000 flame red cc. I realize sanding is required, but I am really unknowledgeable on the order and grades of grit to be used and types of paint... and clear coat etc.. a pic of my truck can be found at this link... http://www.geocities.com/intense79/rob.html

Crash, just so you know rims are a pain in the a$$. Not too many options to sand except by hand. I'd personally take some 600 wet/dry and sand your arm off. You do not have to sand past the paint, just the clear will do just fine. Once all rims are sanded, thay will look dull, alomost like you took them to a automatic car wash with sos pads as scrubbers. next get some, well I like 3M, its called scotchbrite pad, to further the scuffing process. Next prime, be sure to mix correctly. Wetsand, again 600 will be fine. prime again, or clear depending how you feel. Sand, sand, sand, sand. Shoot the base,sand,sand,sand.Base,sand,sand,sand.Base or clear,sand,sand,sand.Clear,sand,sand,buff. ohyeah forgot a step drink a beer in between each step.

Crash,
pbxr is partially correct. All you need to do is sand them with 400-600 grit sandpaper , then paint them. If you want to you could prime them , but it shouldn`t be necessary unless they are beat up. Also you can use a "single stage" paint that requires no clear and is very durable if you wish to skip the whole base/clear option. If you do it this way all you need to do is scuff and spray. If they have some dirt specks then you may have to sand those out with some 1000-1500 wet/dry paper and buff.
If you really want to base/clear them , that`s no big deal either. Basically the same procedure...
sand untill they are dull , clean them REALLY good with some wax and grease remover , and spray a few medium coats of color , let dry then a coat or two of clear.
You don`t need to sand between every coat of paint
That would only be needed if you have a problem.

BTW I am an auto. painter by trade , and I paint all day , so I wouldn`t steer you wrong. It will take some work to do , but it`s not that hard.
I would go to your local automotive paint supplier and talk to them about it. They should be able to get you the correct amt. of paint and all the needed items to do it right.
One last thing..don`t cheap out on the paint and materials , those wheels will get very hot and exposed to alot of abuse , it`ll be easier to do it right the first time with good materials.

Hope I`ve helped you, good luck

crash,

i had painted my wheels black with dupli-color truck/van paint. I just got a scuff pad and scuffed all the wheel and painted. I probably put down about 5 coats apiece on them. They turned out really good except for under the center caps (15X7 wheel). There they chipped away a little... either because i couldnt scuff in there as good or the heat from the brakes. I think a better paint would of worked or a good clear coat or something to that nature

Hey don't mind me, I guess I am just old school. I too have been a painter ten years, 5 @ collison, 5 @ custom. I just listed my personal methods of painting. I just assume to do an extra step here and there for perfect results. The only reason why I suggested to prime and clear is due to the fact that if you "scrub"too much, on a metal surface in direct contact with moisture, a primer and or clear will help prevent rusting, even just surface rust, for years to come. Oh and by the way, I have YET to see a perfect base shot outside of a booth. There will be imperfections, especially for a novice painter, no offense. But hey who am I? I'm just a pbxr now. Good luck with what ever process you choose. But I would continue to watch these posts, opinions are like a$$holes every's got 'em

I don`t want a pissing match , I`m just saying you don`t need to get that carried away.No one ever said you didn`t know what you were talking about.
BTW , I paint custom Harleys in my garage all the time with very little dirt or imperfections, normally none , in the basecoat...it dries very quickly. The only reason I buff the clear on them is to make them flat as glass.

One more thing , I think we`re talking about painting aluminum wheels , are we not? They don`t rust , so again , the primer step is probably unnessary. The least amount of material you can use , is almost always better.
One thing you are correct about...opinions are like a$$holes!!

Scott, dont mind me, bad day. A forum is an easy way to vent with out fists a flyin' AND you are right, I did not think of alum. rims, my bad. As far as your garage, I take it, it is nicely set up with as less clutter around as possible, with ofcourse a proper gun, and a tank that displaces the correct or near amount of min. required cfm's.. Again you are also a professional, slight advantage. True? And again, I guess I am just old school, never had regrets yet, and I also continue to paint, on occasion in my garage,(free of clutter w/ grav. fed sata hvlp, attached to compressor pushing over 18cfms.) Alum. doesnt rust, but I am sure you will agree without going through some of the motions, peeling, flaking etc can and will most likely happen in the future. So I take it we can call it a draw, with my apologies for pissing on an otherwise good day. Besides the one thing about this site/forum that I like is the amount of technical exp./advice most people here try to share with others. Isnt that what this is all about, givin our 2 centz, and hope for the best. Take it easy.

No problemo senoir , apology accepted my friend.
As a fellow painter , I can definately relate to having a bad day , especially when work is slow(as it is now , for myself).

Believe it or not , my garage isn`t all that clean , I do however have a good air source(6hp-60gal upright tank which is filtered before going into my guns). There are times I get cleaner jobs in my garage , than I do at work in our Garmat down draft paint booth. I believe it`s 90% luck 10% skill. I`ve worked with many painters/bodymen that thought they were the best in the world...I`ve never had that attitude about myself or work , I just continue to try and make customers happy.
Just curious , what kind of custom work do you do?
I only ask , because the custom stuff is a lot more fun for me to do than working on Camrys and Kias etc..all day.

As far as painting those rims , make sure they are sanded as good as you can , clean them as good as you can , and use quality products...and follow the directions of the materials you use , and you should have no problems.

Probably , but it would be more money , and then you would be without your wheels for...who knows how long. You would need another set of wheels and tires or another veh. to drive while they were being done.
Plus , if you paint them ,you can have the satisfaction of telling people you did it yourself.

Scott, the custom work I have done in the past has been a mix. Bikes, including hogs, and rockets. Rockets are more common right now, they seem to be the hot thing right now. Last one I shot was black with an orange flake, six coats of clear, looked sharp. Also I have painted a few custom jobs on cars, primarily muscle. But I now only paint on the side, mostly for friends, and family etc. Its a nice source of secondary income. I can also relate to being slow at the shop, that is one of the reasons I got out of it full time. I agree, that jobs for collison get repetative, verses custom work. The shop I used to work at was a 5 star collision, with a contract with Saturn, Mazda, Lexus, Infinity. We also did your basic ins. claim, on a lot of pieces of $hit. Try blending an 85 cutlass for example, with the rest of the hooptie looking like in was in a demolition derby.

db, scotts right, depending how busy and or slow your powder coater is, your with out a vehicle, for some time. Hell if I were you, just paint it, but warning sometimes shooting is contagious, you might start thinkin of what to paint next. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Ok.. I have a wrench to toss back into the ring now. My rims are different. 2 of them are the total silver paint with the clearcoat, BUT the other two around the outside lip are brushed aluminum... anyone ever seen this before.. ? which now creates a problem, as I can't paint the brushed aluminum, the paint will never stick.
Maybe this is a sign.. damn I should just leave them silver.. grrr!!

Well.. kinda.. the entire rim is paint from the center outwards to the tire.. then right where the little lip is about a 1/4" before the main outside diameter of the rim is what is brushed (not painted)... 2 rims are like this and 2 are fully painted...

Got an Idea.......
what about just alidine the rims? If they are aluminum..... it should work. bad part is that the only alidine I ever see on a daily basis is like a gold color. At work, we deal with like 4 different alidine companies and all are a gold color. Maybe if I call around, someone makes different colors.

Bad part is that one one would have to STRIP the whole darn rim and I wouldn't suggest blasting aluminum. Done that mistake once. And I would emagine thats even more sanding

But just imagine gun metal or blue alidine rims might look different on stock dodge rims

Just thought I toss another swing to the idea. I never worked in a collision shop or custom shop.... just paint B-2 bombers@5 years so I couldn't tell you how much the stuff REALLY cost!

But what ever painting prodject you do...... don't forget the beer step!!!!!

Its like a ......... alclad coating that one could apply on alluminum alloys. We use it like a primer but once its on ... you have to acually romove metal to take it off. But it was a bad idea anyways.... I found out how much it cost and it would be cheaper to just paint it base/clear

Hi, I found this thread doing a google search on "painting aluminum rims". I read through some of the instruction posts above but I know NOTHING about painting and my application is slightly different so I was hoping one of the experts in Scott, or pbxr, or even Crash if you painted them already, would be able to help me out a little more.

Ok now the reason I have to repaint my rims is because they were straightened so the heat melted the paint, obviously, where it was straightened at. Now I was HOPING I could just repaint that area possibly (I'm NOT looking for a showroom type finish, just something that'll blend in with the rest of the wheel from a distance at least) instead of having to sand off the good paint on the rest of the rim and repaint the WHOLE thing, can I just repaint the portion that's missing the paint? And it's already been sanded by the shop that did the straightening. And from what I've gotten above is that I don't have to prime them because they're aluminum, or do I want to prime them because it will help prevent the paint from peeling off???? Sorry the "dumb" questions but I am a rookie when it comes to painting :)

Also if someone else can help me with this problem I'd appreciate it too, but how can I find out the color code of my rims? The dealer doesn't know because the body shop says they send out rims to be repainted. The only thing close I can get to is the little cards wal-mart carries for their spraypaint, but they don't have the card that has the shades of silver that my rims are in. I was wondering if there would just be a code for them? It's the stock aluminum rims off of a 1997 Ford Taurus SHO. Thanks!

Tom

p.s. Can you reply to my email as well in case this forum doesn't send emails on a topic reply?

Our engines don't break...thats funny, My cousin had a brand new Dodge Dakota and he had it in the dealership about 5 times because the paint on the rear bumper kept peeling off, sounds like a quality problem to me. Last summer I was driving home and saw a brand new Dodge Ram broken down at the stop light right down the road from my house. If you guys were smart, you'd either own a Honda or Toyota. They never break down. From the time I was 16-27 I owned about 6 different cars, including Ford, Pontiac & Chevy and had to dump money into all of them, Then I got smart and bought a Honda, never had a problem and still driving them to this day.
