Subject: new popping sound after lift
IP: Logged

Message:
I got a new popping sound coming from my front suspension. I've already replaced the ball joints so I've been able to rule that out. It only occurs when I'm turning and sometimes when I'm braking. I was planning on doing my brakes this weekend so I'll be able to rule them out then. I've checked all my bolts and their tight. I haven't done any wheeling yet and it just started yesterday. I won't really have a good chance to get elbow deep on this until the weekend so any suggestions I can get from now till then would really help out. Could it be my tie rods? Suggestions?

Turn your wheels all the way to the right and check the clearance of the steering damper bolt where it mounts to the center link. My was too long and hitting (gouging) the frame. A little sawzall adjustment and the popping went away.

You Need a steering shaft, I have a 2001 club and just put a 3 in. body lift on it and the same thing happened but mine is almost always on braking. Before you change it make sure that the extension for the shaft is super tight if you have a rack & pinion. I'm a dodge Tech. Let me know what you come up with.

it sounds like rice krispies...lol

I'm going to check everything out this weekend and see if I can find out where its coming from...I don't understand how it could be the steering shaft but the symptoms sound similar. Could you explain this further TimmyBlak? I'm going to check the damper bolt while I'm at it. Thanks for the help guys.

born2steel- what did you find out was wrong with your truck?? I'm having the exact same problem with mine. One of the mechanics I talked to said it may be CV's. I'm curious to see what your problem was...

Look under truck just inboard of front cab mount, where firewall comes down to the floor of truck. The body gets "stress cracks" and as you turn the body flexes and it "POPS". Go to a welding shop and have it repaired then spray w/undercoating, no more noise
