I have a 1995 Dodge DAkota Sport and I want (for some unknown reason) to keep my 4-cyl in it and just upgrade it as much as i can. I am only 17 and don't know much about engines, and i would like someone to tell me everything i can do to it to get the maximum performance, and what would be the best 5-spd transmission to put in it, bc I dont think my stock one will hold up. Also, will I need to replace my clutch and stuff too? Any help you give will be greatly appreciated.

chris, If you want to keep your 4 banger I would advize u to find the same engine from a junk yard and build it from the ground up. dont worry about finding forged parts on the web or some thing your local machine shop can order your pistons by size alone. your rods are cool just try to find better rod bolts and have em all balanced . polish and port your head get stainless valves better valvesprings and a good lowend cam . peaco racing can custom grind you a cam. do that and you can give it a little laffin gas. but dont waist your cash on b.s. airfilters and headers just because they are pretty . ??? desertjeeper@aol.com

If you put it on gas, that would give you good power some of the time but you can put it on boost with little to no other mods for reliabe horsepower. The are some companies that make superchargers for the jeep 2.5L which is the same but it has a smaller brake master cylinder. I also know that putting a turbo on can be done with less money and more boost. But you have to get the directions from some guy or do it yourself. You said you didn't know that much about engines, so I would recomend the supercharger, but it costs about 4 grand. I have put a flowmaster Highflow cat and muffler on along with MSD ignition, cold air intake, 180 thermostat, and Accel Spiral Core wires. Helped me out alot. You can always pick up power with better ignition and breathing. If your talking about trying to get the most out of your engine, then you should build it up, btu you can get ressonable power out of it without worrying too much about internals. I plan to do a good rebuild as soon as I get the cash flow, just for the challenge. You should get a better clutch if your going to make more than 200hp for sure. It barely holds good right now. Check out this sites archives on the 2.5L. I know there is a link to a web site somwhere where you can order an instruction manual to put a turbo capable of 14#'s of boost for about $1500 dollars. Of course that doesn;t mean you have to run 14#, but you can do 7-8#'s with out concern.

hey dog rat has good ideas about puttin on a charger but if you put a charger on a high mile motor its bound to f@#% off! plus thats $4000 you got to have at one shot plus know how to install it some turbos require less compression and that means you are back to building your motor , if you build your motor youll learn how it really works and you can do it over some time. you can spend alot of $$ on wires and intakes but youll still be like everybody else, slow. decide if you want a charger build it for that charger you cant build a fast motor that works with any type of induction you just cant, not if you want real speed oh yea when your at the parts yard grab another tranny if you build your motor rite your gonna need it ..
