I have a 87 shortbed that had a 4cyl/5 speed. I am going to swap a 318/727 combo i pulled from a '72. I have access to the entire truck, intake, harness, etc. from a '92 or '93 Ram. Has anyone done this. I have never messed with the fuel injection stuff. i would like any input on the subject. Thanks.

Lots of parts swapping to do. You'll need the Magnum heads/intake, and all related fuel systems/ignition components. You'll need to notch the 727 bellhousing...see FSM or other repair manual to see, or perhaps the one in the truck if it's still there. You'd come out a lot easier using a Magnum engine to start with, because you'll basically be grafting all that's Magnum to an LA. If you do the Magnum graft, you'll also need lifters that oil through the pushrod, MP sells the appropriate hollow pushrods for oiling Magnum-style (also appropriate length). You are in for some work, but it's certainly do-able. Get a Magnum computer for a stick shift since you'll be using the 727. That way, the computer won't be asking where the tranny is. and freaking out. You may want to go carb to get it running while you sort out and gather the Magnum gear.

hey im lookin at doin the same type of thing on my 1990 4 by dakota im starting with a 98 magnum engine im going to go with a wiring harness, pcm, engine mounts, from a dakota that had a 318 already this should make it a plug and play (i hope) also tp be considered is the clearance from the water pump shaft to the rad.... with my magnum according to my measurements i will get approx .5 to .75 inch this calls for the need to use a electric pusher fan oh and im goin to use the a500 tranny my truck came with i hope this also works for me.... good luck and post your progress as i will mine

Stick with the electrical and PCM components from the '92-'95 models unless you really like aspirin.

Thanks. I don't believe the motor that came out of the Ram was a Magnum. I might be wrong about the year though. My buddy owns the truck and he took it out and through a carborator on it to put it in a late 80's 4x4. He kept all the fuel injection stuff so i think I could get it easy. He had planned on swapping the fuel inj. into the 4x4 but decided against it. If anybody knows how to wire it up, please share the knowledge. I appreciate it.
