Hey folks,
I’ve got a couple of questions for everyone. I’m debating the JBA Header buy and want your unbiased opinions:-). Here’s my current setup:

98 5.2L 4x4 Auto
Leach PCM (Setup for the Supercharger)
180 T-Stat
3923’s (About to be 3922’s)
MSD 8.5 Wires (No shit, these actually made a difference)
50mm Flow Metrics TB (Ground the Air hat to fit TIGHT)
Gibson Catback Dual Exit Behind the Tires
K&N Cold Air Intake (Until the SC shows up)
Gatorback Belt
Black Magic Fan
24# Ford Injector’s (Not installed until I get the SC in and tuned)
IAT box
PowerDyne SC, with Randy’s Tensioner, both the stock 6PSI pulley and also the 9PSI 7RIB pulley (Everything BUT the Supercharger is here, it should have been here LAST Monday, Powerdyne must be having a bad week)

Now here are the questions. What makes the most since for my next step? The headers, a new ported and better flowing intake manifold, free flow Cat, new CAM, or MSD6BTM / Coil / bla, bla? Or anything else you can think of. A few questions come to mind about the headers, such as being a 4x4 I will have this sucker off road, do I need to worry about the headers getting wet, how much maintenance are they (how often do I have to torque them down), and since I don’t have a fan clutch anymore will the Headers throw off more heat and make me run more of a risk of overheating??? I am really concerned about the additional heat, am I wrong to think this. What about the headers getting warped from going through a stream and what not? Will the Silver Ceramic Coating keep them looking fresh? And really what kind of difference will I get out of the headers vs another mod. If I get the headers then that’s it for a month or so at leastJ. Also on the 98 5.2L 4x4 Auto I assume I need the Ceramic Headers AND the Y-Pipe?

Now, I hear people knocking the 4x4’s and their speed. I damn sure would like this truck to flat whoop some ass after doing these mod’s. Truly what should I expect for ¼ ET’s out of this sucker? I can tell a HUGE difference with the few mod’s I’ve done, and I know once that Powerdyne is on it will blow me away (I really am probably going to do a 50 shot on top of it before long). In the end I’ll have a new Intake Manifold, Cam, and probably Ported & Polished R/T Heads. But these last mods will be done over some time. I guess I just need some direction and general advice.

Any advice is appreciated!

Honestly, the headers will help in the long run with the ported intake and heads as well as in the interim. Definitely ceramic-coated for lonegevity and cooler operation (header temp).

As for the times, a good friend had a 1998 5.2L 4x4 and was running mid 14's with it (Powerdyne, TB, headers, cat-back, MSD, and 4.10 gears on both front and rear diff's).

If you're going to be doing a lot of offroading, keep the factory manifold stock as well as the heads. No need to port them since that will raise your powerband into the higher RPM range. This is great for racing but bad for offroading where the average RPM is 1500-2000max. (Not 3000-5000rpm)

Come on, I know some of you could toss in a suggestion or two. I allocated a set amount to spend on this truck and took a portion to dontate to this site. I help when I can so please return the favor by throwing an opinion or two my way as to what the next best step would be.

It would be greatly appreciated,

Shawn

I would suggest installing headers but get them coated and use the larger Y-pipe. I started off with a set chrome Gibson headers and noticed little gain in power and burned a set of plug wires, way too much heat.
Had them ceramic coated and installed a JBA Y-pipe, no more problem with heat and a big increase in power. The stock Y-pipe is just too small (1 1/2") compared to the JBA (2") to allow the headers to flow properly.

shawn, do you have a throttle body yet? i put one on my 5.2 and noticed a big increase in torque in the lower rpm's (which would help you more scence you have a 4x4 and actually go off roading ;)
i dont know how well it work with a SC. probably better than a normaly asporated engine.
also what gears are you running? changing your gears will give you better "out of the hole" responce and wont effect your rpm's that much

Yup, got the 50mm FM Billet TB, right now I'm debating on the M1 intake or the ported / polished one that KRC sells.

I'm not really concerned with low RPM off road performance, thats 10% or less of the time. My purpose is to see what's the lowest ET's I can get on this 4x4. I'm buying a 4x4 Durango for the wife in the next year and I'll end up buying myself a 2wd Dak and will migrate the parts off of my 4x4 to it. I'll probably start with a fresh 5.2 or 5.9 and build it for the new Dak, and buy a 98 Dak with a ton of miles or a blown engine. Now maybe some folks will understand why buy all this for a 4x4, they will just migrate to the next one:-)

I "think" i've got 3.92's, I need to check. I've only had this one for a month or so.

Kota...

What kind of TB did you pick up, and how did it fit with your intake?

I'm foaming to buy the soon-to-be-released F&B 69mm TB for my 4.7, but I've heard that the O.D. of the new TB is much larger than stock, and the also S-T-B-R K&N GenII wouldn't even come close to fitting.

How'd ya do it?

broeheem, i got my TB through magnum performance. the TB's on the 5.2 and the 4.7 are totally different. the 5.2 and 5.9's have twin blades with a large portion of material around the out side. no matter how large you port the tb's on the 5.2 any intake will fit. unlike the unlike the single blade on the 4.7. (its kinda hard to explane, but when i see you again ill show it to you if you want)

also i am still tring to get a hold of my friend with the bed rug. sorry for the delay, but he did'nt show up to the cruse night again. ill keep you posted. $100 for sure though

Wet Headers
IP: Logged

Message:
Response for question about headers getting wet:

I have an '85 Chevy K20 4x4 that has more mods than you could imagine. I have to run headers on my engine due to my mods. I have been through several sets of headers. I have actually broke a header tube in half and I have warped them. I am convinced that this is due to getting them wet. Each time I have bought headers I have upgraded to a better set. I think my next set will definately be ceramic coated. I think this will help quite a bit.

By the way - my big 4x4 is for sale if anyone knows anyone that might be interested.

I did need to modify my Airhat. The Flow Metrics 50mm required a slight mod using a dremal. The Airhat has small tabs that are .5" long or so on the bottom, I chewed them away with a dremel using a stone grinding tip. Worked great.

It was the stock air hat. Still has the metal support bracket inside it and you would never know by looking at it that it was modified, the dremel REALLY did a clean job with that stone grinding bit. Pretty cool actually. Sucker is torqued down and the metal bracket inside/ontop of the TB was turned upside down, I trimmed the shit out of it to for better air flow and it no longer stradles the TB bores screwing up airflow. This was done for the Flow Metrics 50mm TB, I wish I had gotten the 52mm though with the mods I'm doing.
