Subject: RT Vs. My 4.7
IP: Logged

Message:
So I raced a stock RT with my nearly stock 4.7 and I have to say, it was definately close. We only got a chance to race from a 30 mph roll but it was a good one never the less. I lost, but only by a single car length! I was envious until i remembered what those piggies suck down in gas... felt better after that. Just thought I'd share a little personal defeat with ya.

a STOCK R/T and a nearly stock 4.7. HMMMMM..... what do you consider nearly stock? intake, flash, TB, thermostat, exaust? Damn and your precious, moded, lightwieght, 4.7l, 5 speed could not even gain? HHMMM Maybe the almighty 4.7 isnt all that powerfull afterall compared to the r/t. but hey I commend SLEEPY for sharing a loss. Most these 4.7l guys would die before they admit an R/T beat them. I am not trying to start anything, just trying to keep it fueled.

Nearly Stock is simply aftermarket exhaust, and drop in K&N. And BTW 14mpg city is a definately a gas piggy. My Wanna-be hemi as you put it gets 17.8 mpg City. 5.9 are only fuel effecient when compared to aFord Excursion v10 driving 95 mph into a gale force wind.

My litte 99 anit to special but she aint slow just a litte info on her 1 paxton superchager with a air to water intercooler that runs no water. I took my ac return lind off and ran it to the intercool and the back to the truck lots of cold air any time gained my 10 horse even with the ac running LOL. 1 helltec computter full adj and "O"ringed heads for more boost 26 lbs to be exact. 1 bottle of co2 and a manifoild with a chamber to the exuasht to lower the temp for more bost and hp and lest harm to the motor. And yea 4.7 are wannabe hemi's no push rod JUNK peace out LOVE my little 4x4

26lbs of boost? Come on! That's impossible to do with a stock engine. Anything less than a full blown race engine will blow either the heads or the bottom end smooth off the motor. Typically,
anything over 14lbs requires extensive internal mods to the engine. There have been a few motors from the factory that could handle that much boost. But, they were designed for boost. The 4.7L was not designed for boost. One engine in particular, that comes to mind, is the 87-90 Shelby GLH 2.2L engine. Not even the stock 2.2L turbo could be safely cranked up to more than 12psi with an after market intercooler. You had to have the Shelby engine in order to go to 14psi. Beyond 14psi you had to really get into redesigning the entire engine. A refrigerated intercooler or an O'ringed head won't get you to where you need to be to run 26psi. How about a billet steel fully radiused crank to start with. A shorter stroke would also help. Then you need forged aluminum pistons with LESS than 8:1 compression ratio. The shorter stroke will allow you to run a slightly longer rod and slightly taller piston. You need the longer rods to cut down on the side loading of the piston which will cause you to break piston skirts. You need the shorter stroke to slow the speed of the piston down. This will help keep the engine from burning a piston. The taller piston will allow you to move the upper piston ring further down. This will help keep the ring from collapsing under the extreme heat it will have to endure. Also, the longer piston will cut down on piston slap because forged pistons have to run with larger clearances between the piston and the cylinder walls. The taller piston also helps cut down on side loads that break the skirts off. Of course, all of these components will have to be balanced. Then there must be some serious mods to the block. A 4 bolt cross drilled block with 4130 machined steel main caps would be a good starting point. Then you need a main gurdel to tie the main caps and the bottom of the block together. Then you have to have some serious fastener upgrades to hold the heads and the rod caps. If you have made any or all of these mods you have way exceeded the budget of a good Dakota R/T. Not only that, your transmission would go up in smoke the first time you try to make a run down the 1/4 because with 26lbs of boost you should be making over 700HP. Hell, the Lightning makes 380HP with about 7 or 8lbs. So you could just about triple the the Lightnings HP numbers. BULL!@#$! Being a 4WD, you will snap the yokes off the drive shaft or grenade the transfer case. Your story might be more convencing if you hadn't miss spelled every other word. Anyone smart enough to build an engine or truck of this magnitude has more than a second grade reading level. Go blow smoke up some one else's ass with your 26psi!

hey i will keep this simple here is my email send me a email and i will sent you my phone# you can talk to my tech at our shop. I am not a tech and I did not build it I helped install it. the motor can from a company in germany prebuilt for a super charger and cost 2500 plus just over 1000 in shipping. I am just a codriver for a offraod race team. So i know enough to get my self in trouble but i do know what they told me my tuck has. and I do know that a stock powerstroke has 11 lbs of boost hummm how do they do that. and for you info there is a company in texas that builds a turbo kit for dakota that goes after the "Y"pipe that runs on a stock motor that has a continous 18 lbs when you email me i will gladly get you the # for them. go back to your garage and read your haines manual.

I happen to think the 4.7 is a damn nice engine! Easiest oil change in the world on that engine. I think it would be nice for Dodge to put some research into squeezing a little more horsepower out of that engine every year if they could. GM kept pushing more and more horsepower out of their LS1 with each passing year. And why the hell doesnt dodge give jeep the finger and offer the High output 4.7 from the factory?!?!?!? I'm sure Dodge could squeeze 300 horse from that HO 4.7 with a little more tweeks. Wouldn't that be nice?

Thats the advantage of a 5.9 or 5.2 You get a much higher amount of improvment in preformance with things such as Intake Chip and Headers. I have scene trucks just under 300hp with those. Stock 4.7s hardly gain 15/20HP with those mods.

very close.... Not much performance different when
stock. The difference only comes if you Modify the R/T
vs Modify the 4.7.... and then race.... You get better
power from the mods if you do it to a 5.9 ;)

wow, does every discussion on this site have to turn into an r/t bashing?i have an r/t,and they are the sh@t.ive never had as much fun driving anything else, especially not a regular dak!

but a question for you wiser tech people out there, what would be the best computer upgrade on a 2002 r/t,given the fact that mopar doesnt make a pcm anymore and that it really doesnt seem that hypertech will be making a powerprogrammer for them.ive been asking them for six months and all i get is "sometime soon".
