Subject: 380hp Crate Engine IP: Logged
Message: Got a couple of questions for you guys out there that have experience with this crate engine. I Currently have a 99 R/T, with serious oil burning problems. I was thinking of rebuilding the original 360 my self, but then the thought of a crate engine crossed my mind, but I've never swapped an engine before. But anyway, I believe it says "Not for use with air conditioning" is it as cut & dry as "No A/C"? Cause that would suck. And it says it is ready for an MPI conversion. Now since I plan to upgrade to 52 maybe a 54mm TB, would I be able to use the original stock fuel injection equipment? Or would I need to buy new injectors, wiring, etc.? Any and all info is much appreciated. And let me know if there is anything else you guys think I should know before SERIOUSLY considerring this venture.

Ther are a few different "crate" engines.
Yes they have a direct replacment for your 360 r/t but you are right, there is the 300,380and 435 versions that dont (suposedly)support MPI and all that.
I myself dont get it but maybe somebody on here has tried one anyway.
Good luck dude.

Message: I would almost bet money that your oil burning problem is a bad plenum gasket which can be fixed in a few hours with simple hand tools.....the 360 is a superb engine.....work with what youve got and youll make more power with that as opposed to the crate engine. anyways, with the crate engine, youd have a ton of money getting that thing set up right and make 380 HP....you will need a different cam(carbureted and FI engines run different cams) and a stand alone fuel injection system.....either that or gut the computer and stap on a carb.....good luck with either choice you make, but I would recommend keeping what youve got, spend the HALF money that you would on a crate engine and build a 408.

Message: I will have to check that plenum gasket now. I take it you have seen this problem in the past? But yeah, my original desicion was do a 408 stroker. Now that I know where to look for the leak, I will probably build up the original engine my self. you see I was originally a Chevy man, but then last July I saw the errors of my ways and converted to Mopar, and haven't looked back since. But while I'm here, do you guys have any recomendations for a Cam, and or rockers? And thanks Cerecke, I appreciate the info, who would think someone would actually try to help on this board.
Thanks Again!

Message: a year and a half after placing questions out here and only getting answers thru searching old posts, I feel your pain....members get a lot more attention here, only moreso after all these losers keep bumping old posts...and yes, I have fixed the plenum gasket myself...dealer wanted 700 bucks, did it myself for 23....the old plenum gaskets sucks, DC did a little research and now the gaskets have a metal core....the m1 is the best option.....if you like the stock manifold and low end torque consider having a fabrication shop weld an aluminum plate to the manifold to completely seal it.

Message: Thanks again guys, now I don't know much about the M1, I've heard to many things and it's got me all confused. I was definately going to buy the M1, but don't know what exactly is available. Single Plain, 2bbl, 4bbl? Which is applicable? And which TB to go with after the fact. Massively confusing, what do you guys think is the best set up? Like I said I am new to the Mopar world. Be Gentle!

Message: dak slt....its a Patriot cover, cost me about 800 bucks when I bought it in 99.
here are you manifold options for the M1....2 barrel or 4 barrel (4 barrel is 100 bucks cheaper but if you are not running a 4 barrel TB then you will need an adapter plate) Both M1s make less torque than the stock, but from 3 grand up make about 20 hp more and about 35 hp more to around 6 grand (which is worthless if you dont have computer mods because your rev limit is 5250. The 4 barrel M1 will reduce your torque more than the 2 barrel M1 and is not recommended unless you have extensively modified the intake and exhaust (i.e. head work, cam, headers......not to mention higher stall converter) for instance I am building a 408 right now and could run the 4 barrel, but it still might be a little too large for my application....even with the 4 barrel, I still plan on running a 2 barrel TB, so if you want to lose a little torque off the bottom, but gain high end HP get the 2 barrel m1....I would recommend doing a little reasearch here on the board and look into modifying a stock kegger.....www.car-part.com....get a kegger for about 50 bucks and hack away....look to www.hughesengines.com for details on how long to make the runners......
