I have a '99 dakota sport 5.2 5 speed with the 3.92 gears and limited slip i ran a 15.6 at Desota Speedway in Bradenton, FL last summer
Why is it that the R/T's are no faster than me? is it cuz mine is a 5 speed or cuz its a regular cab ? only mods are a K&N Drop in filter and 295/50/15 rear tires 275/60/15 front and 1 40 flowmaster it has 71k miles... someone please explain. i bought the car used maybe it has other mods im not sure of it eats gas like crazy 14 city 15 highway and has wicked short 1st gear
driving around town im in 5th gear but 40 mph.

If anyone wants proof i have the track slips i can get scanned and post them i ran it 4 times and gradually got better it started at running a 16.3 then a 16.1 then a 15.8 then a 15.6 on my last one i was almost out of gas or i would have ran again.

I'd say it's the 5-speed, since the R/Ts also come in Regular Cab models. Sounds like you know how to shift, my friend :0)

5.2L yuck! Try a 4.7 L more horses and a little less torque, what elevation are you running at? 15.6 seems kind of high, I have seen 4.7's run a 14.6 or lower all motor.

I'd personally love a 5.2L 5-speed Extended cab 2WD w/ 3.92 gears. Thats like, my dream Dak, unless they make the same with a Hemi next year.

There is just something about a cast-iron block, old-style pushrod design that will always hold a special place in my heart. Maybe it's just fond memories of working on old Chevy 305-350s, or my Fathers Pontiac 400... But the 4.7L is a nice engine, just wish it had better pistons and rods.

DGEDAKNUT....

He is right about the 4.7 times. That would be for a 4.7 5-spd 3:92 combo.

My truck has a Flowmaster muffler, and runs 14.8@91mph...(2000 SLT 4.7 5-spd 3:92)There are plenty more out there that are just as fast and faster.

Some R/T's run 14's as well.

Your 15.6 seems kind of high. What kind of 60ft'er were you getting? MPH in the 1/4?
I feel if your combo is tuned right you should see at least a 15.2-3, provided there's a 2.0(or better) 60ft'er, and good shifting going on.

Alex,

Have you got any videos? I'm going to the track Thursday night, weather permitting. Think I'll role some video.... I haven't ran the truck since March of this year, but nothing has changed, so I believe I'll be looking at 14.8's & 14.9's...

Anxiously awaiting some form of forced induction.

Is your 14.55 before or after the HO cams & intake? How much E.T. did you lose from adding them?

Later

I would say you run with stock R/T's, but some stockers run faster. You still have a 5.2L V8 that's putting out near the horsepower of a 360.

I would say having a 5-speed gives anyone a huge advantage on a mild performance setup. Closer gear ratio's, less drive train loss, higher lunch rpm's for starters and maybe even lighter weight due to a smaller engine and for sure the tranny weighs less. But start added major power and having more cubes yelds more power while the heavy auto give more consistance times while handling the increase power loads. I've heard of a few 4.7L with 5-speed breaking axles, burning out clutches, shafts and more. Seems like most everything has it's goods and con's. Ups and downs.

Here's my dragtruk entry:

http://www.dragtruk.com/ENTRIES/0F64H9L1P5IL.html

The "before cams, etc" best ET was a 14.93 @ 91.50 mph.

I then mounted up the HO cams, HO intake manifold, 21# Ford injectors, and changed from a 28" ET Street to a 26" ET Street. All of that happened at one time and I then went a 14.66 @ 92.78 mph.

I went back once it got cold for the last race at Atlanta Dragway and ran a 14.55 @ 92.50 mph....

Every mod on the dragtruk page was in place except for the cams, intake, injectors and short tire when I went 14.93.

If we can get more folks interested, I would make the drive to Atlanta one Saturday. It's only 2-1/2 hours away.

The times are looking better and better! Congrats

Well, opening day is usually in late February or early March and they usually have two weeks where it's allll day Saturday for $20. Test n Tune and maybe a gambler race. But it goes like 8 am to 6 pm and you just run all you can get. Maybe my truck will be fast by then.

Thanks for the compliment, though.

PS- I am watching your progress to see the results of a Paxton install on a 4.7...... just so you know. hahahaha
