Subject: 440 in a dak? IP: Logged
Message: OK, got a couple of questions, I'v been looking at lots of mods for the dak, most of which state they are not legal in polution controlled vehicles, well, they check that here in TX, how the hell are you suppose to do anything to your engine if it won't pass inspection! All the mods I looked at that would pass, I feel are a waste of time/money, such as throttle body. So, I have the chance to pick up a 440, REAL cheap, this may sound like a dumb question, but what are the chances you could cram a 440 under the hood of an R/T dak? and the other thing is, how the hell would you get that to pass inspection? I know a lot of you guys are here in TX, do you know of a place that passes without checking emissions or something? how the hell am I suppose to cam up my truck if it won't pass!?!?
So, this is the way I see it, after a certain year, they dont' check emissions, so I have to find a body to drop that 440 in, does anyone know of where I could get an old road runner/challenger/charger/ or so on that doesn't have an engine and needs to be restored? Every paper and online place I've looked has them already spiffed out with 440's and 383's and such in them, I'm just looking for a frame, body and wheels, unless someone knows a way to get that 440 under a dak and pass inspection....

Message: Seeing as how a 440 has all kinds of power even with any and all its emissions in lace, couldn't you just "cram" it in and leave it with all its emissions in place?
Better yet, you could move to Florida where they did away with vehicle inspections many years ago.

Message: well, the 440 I'm pickin up won't have any pollution control on it at all, and its gonna be pumped up a bit, I'm not sure a dak could handle it even if it fit. The engine would be coming from a state that doesn't have any pollution control checking at all, the engine is in a junk yard, but complete, runs and all, I was gonna pull it and bore her 30 over, get some flat tops etc etc... no way it would pass in TX that I know of, hell, the cams I've looked at for my 360 aren't legal for polution control, so I was wondering what everyone else does around TX.

Message: theres stuff you can put in your gas I think that you can pass the sniffer. people help me out here. I live in a NH and we don't have emmisions here which is why i'm lookin' for a 440 to put in mine.anyways i've heard there's stuff you can put in your gas tank to pass the test. or you can put it in and lean it right out also to pass then adjust it back, i know there's some old school people here not just EFI.

Message: You could pass inspection real almost anywhere in Jefferson Parish or Metairie LA. That's where I live. They pretty much just check all your lights and horn to get a brake tag here. Maybe figure out a way to register the truck here...
Or you could just drive around and watch inspections, see if any get a lil something to maybe not read/record it correctly:)
Could you possibly not connect the exhaust completely or leave a hole somewhere?
Run ethanol that day? Natural Gas?
I'm just tossing out ideas, sorry if they don't make sense, or won't work...

Message: Well I am stuffing a 440 in a 89 2wd Dak as we speak and I have a neighbor who is a carb wiz that got my 88 318 Dak to pass. He just leans out the carb real bad about a block away from the emissions place and we go in, pass, and get about another block away out of sight and richen the mixture back up. It works like a charm. Also if you run dual Cat's along with your mufflers that should help.

Message: well, my lame advice, would be to keep the engine LOOKING as close to stock as you can..i dont think most state paid people will know the difference between a 360 and a 440...the idea of leaning it out before the test is a viable option..you can throw that "guaranteed to pass" crap in your tank, it has always worked for me, (even with hollow cats on a turd of a chevy 305), and if you do employ *special* exhaust for the test day, make sure the mufflers flow like crap and are quiet...thats all i got for you, best of luck!!
btw, is it your daily driver?!

Message: What part of Texas are you in? I know around Houston the emissions are really tuff. The best way to get it passed is to find a small town, that has a shop that does the emissions testing. The further away from a city the better. If the shop looks old, but they test vehicles thats usually the place you want to go. my friend has a 94 chevy with headers running to a six inch flomaster race muffler, he has no cat. I took him three different shops, but he finally found one, where the guy just made sure the lights, horn, and windshelid wipers work. He didnt even look at the exhaust. If you can find a town where the population is about two to four thousand people those are the places to look. Thats my best advice, plus I have seen vehicles come out of these types of shops with inspection stickers, that shouldn't be on the road sometimes. Just make sure to avoid the big cities when getting your vehicle tested.

Message: Well, if I put the 440 in a 70 or 71 Charger, I wont' have to worry about testing no matter where, right, because that year didn't have polution control, so all those goodies that say "illegal on polution controled vehicles" no becomes legal, 71 charger has no polution control, hell, did they even have cats on them then?

Message: I have been kickin the "BIG" engine mod/swap thing around in my head for over a year now. The conclusion I came up with is to simply have a separate(Monster) engine and leave my 360 as is. Run the monster up until its inspection time(just prior to winter) and do the swap back to the 360 for the winter and inspection. Reverse process afer winter.
The pros...
1. Spare engine in case of serious problems
2. Less wear and tear on both engines
3. Easier to work on engine when on stand
The cons...
1. Cost
2. Swapping 'em out but after you do it a couple times it will be old hat

Message: I had this evil thought a month ago... A co-worker bought a old Ram/Camper conversion. He bought some land and wanted a quick hunting lodge. The body and camper are falling apart to the point where its not very safe to drive. He said he was gonna park it in the woods and seal it back up. The best part, its got a 440/727 with 21K on it! He paid $300 for it all and was willing to sell me the engine/trans if I pulled it myself. I NEED a garage so bad it hurts :)

Message: There's a 98 R/T out here in Las Vegas that has a 440 stuffed into the engine bay. I've never seen it personally but a lot of other local R/T owners and track personnel have seen it run. I'll try to track them down and forward info to you.
