What causes an engine to lose so much umph? My 4.7L V8 has around 70k of mostly highway driven miles on it. All the fluids and services have been done on a regular basis. It has had the thermostat changed out to the 180* and the IAT relocated into the air hat tube. Other than that its a pretty stock 2000 Extended cab Dakota 2-wheel drive truck.

Not trying to be a smarta$$ but think he was asking what is it that wears down inside an engine and causes it to lose power over time per the first sentence.

Biggest culprit seems to be rings and valve seals, resulting in compression loss. Besides that, the cam lobes can and do wear as well, resulting in shorter lifts and durations. Check your compression against what the manufacturer says it should be, if thats fine, get the cams checked to see if they are worn out of spec.

Typically worn rod bearings don't cause power loss, just rods sticking through blocks. At 70,000 miles it may be time to consider replacing the fuel injectors, which I believe are proported to have a 60,000 mile life-span (I've seen twice that, depends on the gas used).
