I got a Mike Leach flash about 2 weeks ago. I had some good power gains regarding low-end torque and better throttle response. However, I lost about 2 mpg according to my overhead console-bad results.

I was also told that it takes about 200 miles of driving for the chip to adjust to the truck. In all fairness, I've been away on vacation for the last couple days and have only put on about 50 miles on the flash. I also don't drive that much when I'm home, but when I do drive, I want to get where I'm going fast.

The cost was $427.00 including shipping (shipping may be more for most people. Both me and Leach and Co. live in California). Overnight shipping was $27.00.

I've got a 2000 4.7 auto cc, 3.92-lsd
Mods: The flash, 2 chambered flowmasters, synthetic mobil 1 and a K$N drop-in filter.

According to most of the posts I've read the HO cams are supposed to be the best mod for the chip. However, I do not know much about superchargers and turbocharger installations. I'd imagine they work well too.

Good Luck and Mopar2ya

I just had my PCM flashed by Mike Leach, and i got it back two weeks ago as well. Since I got the PCM back we have had nothing but rain and SLOW DRIVERS. Since I have a company truck, a ford p.o.s., I don't get to drive my Dakota much.

However, the little bit I have been able to play with it I have noticed better accelleration, and for some reason the exhaust seems to sound better.

The exhaust sounds really nice backing down from 6500 RPMs, and I did manage to get it up to 115 on the beltway before I cought up with traffic.

I have a stock 4.7L auto combo. BTW the tranny shifts at 108. That caught me offguard and I thought I broke something.

I do think it was $400 well spent.

Stuarth, Mopar2ya, Now that you've had another month to enjoy the Leach flash, I'd like to know if you are still as impressed as before. Any problems or negatives to report? I'm close to sending my PCM out, just need a little reassurance.
Thanks,
Eddie

The only thing I've noticed is that my gas mileage came back to normal after losing about 2 miles to the gallon initially. This is according to my overhead console readout.

I've only put about a thousand miles on the PCM. In the thousand miles, I don't regret getting the computer reflashed.

so these leech flashes mean removing the factory computer, sending it away and some dude re maps the thing to do what dodge didn't? for 400 bones the truck better rip. any proven dyno charts to prove this is an upgrade worth the money? i know you guys say you can feel the difference but i also know when hard earned money is spent sometimes we try to convince ourselves that the investment we made was a good one. the only thing that i dont like is once the flash is installed there is no turning back. why can't we get those cool plug in programmers? they seem to forget about the 4.7 guys. any feedback would be appreciated. sending my computer away to get re done will be a tough one to pull off from my wife. i'de have to come up with a really good excuse why my truck doesn't run and why i'm not doin anything to fix it. lol

Does anyone have any real time slips to show the before and after numbers of this "leech flash"?

No offense, but my 2002 already shifts out at 105mph without the flash. It has no problem hitting 117mph where the speed limiter suddenly shuts it down. $400.00 sounds like a rip off to me. My truck does all this with out the flash. I would like the speed limiter bumped up to about 135mph.

You couldn't get this flash with a 2002, but the main reason to get it is for the ignition advance, not just eliminating the speed limiter.

Does it retard the timing at WOT or does it advance it? With these cams having almost no overlap the cylinder pressures at RPM's over 4K sky rocket. This is what causes the detonation problems inherent to these engines. They run better with less spark advance at high RPM's as this helps cut down on detonation. Of course the PCM automatically cuts back the ignition timing when the knock sensor detects detenation. It usually over compensates and this hurts performance. The engine would run better if it never detonated to start with and you could taylor the timing yourself using a lap top. I guess us dihard mopar fans will never see the day when we can tune our engines with a lap top like Chevy and Ford owners can.

That's ridiculous ! Detonation problems are not inherent to the 4.7; nor does the Dodge 4.7 have any knock sensors. It advances the timing for better performance. The aluminum heads allow more compression without detonation. Even with the extra advance I can still run 87 octane without knocking unless towing (then it wants premium). Where do people come up with this kind of misinformation ?

All engines made with computer contolled ignitions (since 1989?) have knock sensors. It's how the factory can offer 70-100,000 mile warranties. They are running higher compression ratios to offer better fuel economy and emissions and HP. It's more criticle now to have knock sensors than it was 10 years ago due to the higher comprssion ratios. It's nothing to get upset about. It's standard procedure to have knock sensors. They are there to protect the engine. People are already having ring land failures on the pistons in the 4.7L. Piston ring land failure is caused by one thing: DETONATION!
The 4.7L needs sensors more than any engine DC has ever built. They have made the piston in this engine lighter and it is consequently weeker around the piston rings. There is less material supporting the rings. I agree the AL heads help reduce detonation. They don't eliminate detonation.

You didn't answer my question. Does the PCM flash advance or retard the WOT ignition timing? If it advances the timing then I will pass on it.

I know for a fact that the 5.9, 5.2, and 3.9 engines did not come with knock sensors! I know of two buds with a 5.9 R/T and 5.2, both with power adders, and they would detonate without any timing being retarded. Each of them would manually have to retard their timing with an aftermarket unit to adjust for any knocks.

Besides, why would DC release the "Death Flash" retard program if these vehicles had stock knock sensors with retard features? The death flash was needed because these vehicles did not have knock sensors.

The only 4.7 that comes with knock sensors is the 4.7 HO in the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The Leach Flash advances the total ignition timing from whatever you currently have up to 29 degrees at wide open throttle. My total timing before the flash was a lazy 17 degrees. Once I got mine flashed, I picked up a solid 4 tenths at the dragstrip. I also picked up 1.5 miles per gallon on the highway. Once I get done at the strip, I can get 22 mpg on the way home doing 60 mph.

My speed limiter has been set to 220 miles per hour and the rev limiter is at 6800 rpm. I have only bumped the rev limiter once coming out of the burnout box in 2nd gear. Mine is a manual trans, so I set my own shift points.

My current best time at the strip is a 14.14 @ 94.79 mph. You can read more about stuff here:

Alex,
Those numbers sound real impressive. If that 17 degrees is what the factory is set at then I can see where some more advance would help. I find that hard to believe. Hell, NASCAR engines run more full advance than 17 degrees and they have combustion chambers and compression ratios that are much more efficient than the 4.7L. I guess I'll just have to take your word for it since I just sold my 2002 RC SLT 4.7L today(No LOVE LOST!). I still have my 2000 R/T CC.
