I have a 2000 4.7L 4x4 w/ 3.55 gears and i dont use anything under 92 octane. I was just wondering what eveyone else uses??.... Think i could get away with using a mid grade without my truck running different??

For a stock truck you can easily run 87 octane ... I do it all the time. That's all I run in fact. You wont get any performance gain by going more, unless you had a PCM flash or a turbo/supercharger, or a higher compression ratio that requires higher octane

You actually make more power with the lowest octane fuel you can run without detonation(assuming the same quality of fuel). Also if it doesn't force you to retard the timing too much. The reason is that lower octane fuels burn faster. If you can run it you will get a more complete burn of fuel?air charge with lower octane. It's fast rate of burn causes it to detonate in high performance engines, that is why race cares use high octane. If your engine runs fine on 87 octane you will actually loss hp by switching to 92 octane.

I use the highest octane I can find at the pump (91) plus NOS off road octane booster.

I use 87 for day-to-day stuff, but 89 0r 92 when I want to go off-road or for long hauls. It helps the gas mileage and the power a touch. I have no bad effects from the 87, just use it for the commute to keep the bills down

Since I can't just bolt in a high performance computor, like I want to on my 4.7. I just run 89 octane like the book recommends. Never had any problems with power or pinging. I had a mopar controller on my 95 ram and had to use 92 or higher.

I use 89 as rule because I've had problems with pinging while towing running 87. I've just installed a 180 stat and haven't had a chance to pull with it yet, but I'm going to make my next tank (or 2) 87 and see if it pings with the 87. I'd like to get my fuel requirements ironed out before I do my cam install - I'm also looking at some head work, but I don't know if that will affect fuel requirements or not. I know eventually I'll have to run 93 since I'm aiming for 300+ HP while keeping the engine NA.

I use 92 if it's a decent price, and 89 if not. Before I did the JET I ran 87, and it worked -ok-. 89 got rid of some hesitation, but before the JET 92 caused wierd issues with stutters. Never did figure that out.
If I run 87 now, it pings like it's got ballbearings in it, and gets -horrible- gas milage.

I use 89 too. I get hesitation and bad gas milage with 87 and I seem to lose power with 92. I usually only notice it on hills though.

89, like some others on here I lose power with anything else. And I get some very short losses of power like a pinging I guess under accel with 87, and with 92 she runs like she's tired.

The owners' manual on my 02 CC 4.7 says to use 87 octane... so that's what I do.

Unless your driving a car with a high performance engine that "Requires" high octane.. your just wasting your money. Or you have an R/T but still I watched a show where they were saying in most cases it will have a negative effect if you use a 92 when you only require 87. but im sure its going to run just fine either way. Whatever makes you feel happy i guess.

I have been told by refinery/blending folks that the key reason to use a higher grade gas on a "normal" car is that they have more additives for keeping injectors clean. For what it's worth they say Chevron is best followed by Texaco. Note that this conversation with an independant refiner happened before the Chevron/Texaco merger
I use Texaco mid grade and when I need to (cuz no Texaco around)I use Phillips. I consistantly get a mile or two better mpg with Texaco over Phillips. I Never use high test so can't comment on that.

I have heard the same about using Chevron gas only. I do not use the higher grades just 87. I also use a injector cleaner additive that my local mechanic recommends using after they do the initial cleaning, then I run a tank every 3k with an additive to keep them clean.

Higher grades of gas have more of the octane moleclule (makes sense) which raises the autoignition point of the gas. So it can be compressed more before it explodes on it's own, which is pinging. If your truck doesn't ping on 87 then run 87. Lots of oil companies put special additives in the higher grades too, so it *might* help keep injectors clean. Did you know gas stations take a loss on regular and make all their money on mid grade and premium? I worked at a refinery for a while as a process engineer and can tell you that the refinery actually makes something like 110 or 115 octane (been a while), then blends it down to get lower grades. I have a 2000 4.7 with light mods running 87 and have noticed no difference between grades. A few years back BMW did a huge study of various brands of gas and Exxon, Mobil, and Shell were up at the top, as I recall. Just stay away from off brands.
