Subject: fan clutch removal?

o.k. i got the damn fan shroud off last night...finally! what a bitch that was! but, i can't seem to keep the water pump pully from moving. suppose i'm standing in front of the truck, lookin in the engine bay...which way do i turn the nut to remove the fan clutch? and how do i keep the pully from moving?

any help would be much appreciated!

turn it to the left, If you are facing the engine, I
tapped the bolt with an air hammer, and it
seemed to free it up without holding the fan,
but you might have to wedge an old screw
driver in there to hold it still.

Use a strap wrench on the water pump pulley (pushing down on the drivers side) and a wrench on the nut pushing down on the passenger side. It took my dad and I doing this to get the fan clutch off, but it worked the best IMO.

no it didn't piss me off...just hard to get off without the fan off! i want some room to work on my motor! now with that 2'x 3' plastic box out of the way, or what ever it is?! plus looks alot better with it gone. fixing to install an electric fan! intinse sure does have a sweet lookin engine bay! doesn't he? anyways, thanks again

I assume you have the old style shroud..... Otherwise you also removed the windshield washer reservoir and the radiator overflow tank. That's gonna make things kinda leaky.....

Actually, on my truck the shroud can be unbolted from the Washer Reservoir and overflow tank. They still sit on top of the radiator, a little wobbly though. However, since the shroud actually bolts to it, I don't see how the shroud helps keep it from wobbling. My shroud is off at the moment, I'll probally stick it back on later, but I want to get that stupid fan off first! Not having a lot of luck.

Take a crow bar or a big chisel that's not too sharp on the end (masonry stuff) and a Big F'n Hammer. Rotate the fan until the nut has one face completely horizontal as you look down from above. Then take the chisel and line the edge up on the left edge of that nut face. Hold it steady and SMACK the chisel with the hammer. The tip should push down on the nut face fast enough to break it loose. You may not notice the fact that it has broken loose, so occasionally rotate the fan to the left in between raps with the hammer. When the nut starts to rotate, you're there,

Get a cheap screwdriver, bend the tip, stick it through one of the holes near the center of the pulley far enough to contact something then just use awrench on the nut. Simple easy and no banging or bashing. now my header install might be a different story LOL

I've done this several times. Leave the serpentine belt in place. It helps to stop the pulley from turning. place a 1 1/2" wrench on the nut and place a screwdriver between the bolt heads that hold the fan assembly to the clutch. pull the wrench while holing back with the screwdriver and it should loosen. Be careful. If it lets go your gonna smash your knuckles. It aint pretty but it works.

so help me understand.... my engine is roaring like a jet plane... my RPM's are normal, so that is my fan clutch? I bought a new one... to take it off has proven fun..... would it be better to get an electric fan? I am assuming the next fan clutch will seize as well. How do you keep it greased so it won't?

First of all, what year and size motor you got?

As in my 4.7, you DON'T need any belt driven clutch or fan. The pulley is pressed on, it won't come off. The stock electric does all the cooling needed.

Do a search, i'ts been talked about for years!

PS, I'll sell you the one of my 4.7!

And if it's like mine, it's a fluid filled, viscous fan clutch, and always is engaged until the fluid spins out, or until it's warmed up. At start up, it'll always sound like a turbo prop plane.

a 5.2. or 4.7?

If you take the belt off, the water pump won't pump. the pulley stays, and everything is OK.

Do you have the electric fan on the back of the radiator?

Todd, Thank you so much for your patience with me. It is a 4.7 and i do have two fans. One that is connected to the fan clutch and a smaller one that is behind the radiator. I would need the water pump to work, wouldn't I? Do I get a shorter serpentine belt when I take off the larger fan?

hello jody, you really don't need to have the clutch fan on your truck at all. I recently had my dealer take it off for me. (Yes everyone i tried to take mine off myself after reading all the post, but just could get the dang thing off). you won't need to do anything with your serpentine belt. If you live down south you might want to but the electric fan on a relay so it turns on when the thermostat opens up. So far i have the stock thermostat and no relay and the truck has not gone above normal temp.

not to be a flamer but you could have seen that he replied with the smaller v8 in 2000, everyone knows that the 5.2 was dropped in 2000 in favor of the 4.7 just a little history lesson
