I realize that the K&N FIPK isolated the filter from hot underhood air, but i wonder how effective this ram air setup would be? Nothing is open to underhood air, plus you have the ability to play around with the different hoses and connections to route air from wherever you please. Plus, it looks like it could be had for half of what the K&N FIPK sells for.

The only drawback I can see would be the hoses and base getting heat soaked on a hotter day.

Whadda guys think?

Yup...a good friend of mine has the RamAirBox on his '95 5.2L Dakota. It works VERY well. (The intake tubes run down to the foglight holes on the airdam.

Do you know the difference between the airhat on my '98 5.2L versus the stock setup your buddy had? I wonder what kinda work is involved in using that RamAirBox in place of my airhat...

The 95 has a bit more clearance...but it should fit. May have a problem with the upper radiator hose though...only one way to find out.

The biggest problem is the upper radiator hose. On the older models, there's plenty of room to install a 14" round air filter...the Gen-III body style (Dakota/Durango) doesn't leave as much room in the rear (firewall area) and the upper radiator hose hits the bottom of the filter base. (Not a big problem though.) I personally don't see any problems with installing it on a Dakota/Durango, but may require some changes to the radiator hose (most common is replacing it with the hose from a Jeep - same engine size). the other issue may be the intake hose routing...there's definitely more room on the Gen-II's.
