Subject: Flowmaster or Dynomax
IP: Logged

Message:
OH, man, i am getting confused. In earlier postings I read that the Flowmaster 50 series Delta Flow was the muffler to go with but with my last post i was told that the Dynomax was much better. Now i don't know what to get, someone please help me to decide. The truck is scheduled to go in next monday, and i still need to tell the guy what type of muffler i want him to order.

Any help would be very much appreciated

Thanks

I know it wasn't a Dodge,,but I owned a '98 F150 w/the 4.2L V6. It had two Dynomax mufflers on it, that both rusted out (cool thing is that dynomax has a lifetime warranty) w/in a about a yr and half. Then I slapped the 2 chamber Flowmaster on her,,and she just purred. Much louder/deeper,,and felt like a bit more punch (pychological probably)
The dynomax was mellower, and seemed to drone at highway speeds. I loved the flowmaster, and have the same thing on my '01 CC 4.7 auto 3.55, and couldn't be happier.

just my 4.7 cents

depends on what dynomax you get. If you get
the Ultra Flow race welded muffler, like I have,
it is more powerful and louder than a 2
chamber 40 series flowmaster. I also
recomend having the local muffler shop
mandrel bend you some 3" pipe for after cat
use. Believe me, It makes a lot more
difference all around. When I had the
flowmaster on, my truck sounded horrible
when shifting @ full throttle. Now, you can
hear and feel the kick when shifting gears. I
have heard a lot of bad things about
flowmaster, welds breaking, and the
Company not guaranteeing (spelled wrong)
the muffler for life. Dynomax offers a
guarantee, and as far as I am concerned is a
better muffler. You can go my route, and
waste $100 having a 2chamber 40s installed
and changing your mind later, or try the
dynomax, Ultra flow mufflers, you will be
happy.

Flowmaster has been around for a while, and
some people like that notable flowmaster
sound, but if your looking for more than just
sound, go with dynomax.

P.S. the ultra flow I bought is 6" round and 21"
long. (Jegs.com $59.99) I added a 4"tip, 3"
pipe and wow!

Instead of the FM 50 Series Delta Flow, go with their 50 SERIES SUV Performance muffler...call Flow Master and ask them which gives better performance gains, sound out the back but less sound in the cab...SUV 50!

If interior sound isn't a concern, go with the FM 40

Disclaimer: never used Dynamax, yet you folks who recommend Dynamax: did you have a FM installed, then swap out for DM and felt DM kicked the FM's butt re: performance gains?

A friend of mine had a Flowmaster 40 series intalled on his truck today. He has a 2001 V6 CC. It sounds very good and not that loud from the outside (I haven't riden in it yet). I have a FM 50 series on my V8 and love it. It sounds mean but not too loud, in fact, at freeway speeds, it is just a little louder that the original (at least from inside the cab). Now as far as performance goes, the mufflers aren't the bottleneck of the exhaust, therefore, don't expect much gain from any of the exhaust systems.
Good luck and truck on...

I would choose a muffler based on sound production. I really doubt there is any perf. to gain from a muffler swap in a stock application. I have heard many say I put on X brand muffler and gained x amount of HP... got dyno results to prove it? Dynomax Superturbo's are a so so muffler in my opinion. I don't like the wrapped steel case or the fact that their packing doesn't last long. If you want that louder hollow sound go w/ a steel cased muffler w/o packing ie. Flowmaster or look into a Hooker Aero chamber as a better flowing less noise unit. If you want a deep muffled sound go w/ a Dynomax race Magnum or a Hooker Maxflow.

Dynomax ultra flow. Much better power gains and great sound. Lifetime guarentee...enough said. Most guys who say the sound of the Dynomax isn't as good as the Flowmaster are probably using the Dynomax Turbo...which is not as loud. Get a Dynomax, and make sure it says "ULTRA FLOW"

In a 4x4 application the flowmaster is much stronger. The flowmaster could support the whole truck on a rock and probably not even dent it. All of the Grand Cherokee guys use the flowmaster, but the muffler is more exposed on a Jeep. I had a flowmaster and 2.5 single exhaust with no cat on my 4.0 liter Jeep and it sounded pretty nice for a six. I think both offer the same performance so it's all about what sound you like, what price you want to pay, and how strong it is. Personally I wouldn't want the Flowmaster for my R/T as I want the lighest muffler possible not the strongest.

Took the stock muffler off my '02 4.7 and replaced it with a Dynomax Ultra-Flow stainless 6" round by 16" long and had a 304 stainless tailpipe bent up to replace the stock unit. The muffler fits up in the frame real nice and the tailpipe was bent so that when I do my 2-3 drop there will be plenty of clearance. Truck has good, healthy sound now. It's louder than stock but not too loud (although my wife told me I woke her up when I pulled in at 2:00 am the other morning). Feels like there's some noticable power gain, but I can't really tell w/o putting it on the dyno. All I know is I'm on the gas all the time and this thing realy goes.

Aaron,
How much did you pay for this installation. It sounds like an excellent way to go. I have the 2/3 drop and have some noise from the heat shield or muffler hitting something at times. Not bad but not right.

Bad thing about Dynomax is that they don't offer a single in dual out muffler they are all single in single out. I put dual tips on my R/T and needed a single/dual...if Dynomax had that I probably wouldve gotten one. FM40 sounds great though and I don't know about power but it didn't feel like I lost any.

I'm no expert, but from what I've read, a single in/dual out setup is not the hot ticket for the 4.7 (although it might sound better). I bought my muffler from Jeg's, cost $99 and paid $220 to have it installed with the custom tailpipe. I'm in the Chicago area so that's probably a little higher than some other places. BTW, this is the same muffler Dynomax sells in their all stainless kit for the 5.9 R/T, except that is a 3" in/out. I went with the 2.5" in/out muffler and 2.5" tailpipe b/c pretty much everyone says a lack of backpressure hurts torque output on the 4.7. Also, this set-up is basically the same as a cat-back because between the cat and the muffler all you have is a straight pipe. So unless you're going to go with a 3" exhaust or remove the cat there's no reason to replace the intermediate pipe. Hope that helps.

loudest is a single chamber race
muffler....they are about 6" long...not very street
legal, but godamn loud!

loudest street legal muffler is the 40 series.
(still not very loud with a stock 4.7 setup) you
need to add an intake, change the stock pipe
to 3" etc.

Dynomax offers many styles wih a single in/dual out application. They have them listed on their web site and on summitracing. I myself have been wanting to know whats best between the two. I called one muffler shop and the installer told me he could install a 40 series delta flow with two 3 1/2 in. tips for $210, But I don't want anything thats going to be too loud in the cab.
