I want to modify my original intake for more flow/performance. I have heard that I can cut 3 inches off of the runners. Is this true? I don't want to ruin the manifold. Is there any special precautions to take when doing this?

I've modified my factory intake by cutting the plenum divider 1.5" shorter, smoothing out the runners, port matched the manifold to the heads, and radiused all edges on the runners as well as on the injector bosses. Total cost: $75 (Machine shop milled the divider for me and the cost also includes some dremel bits.)

Check out http://www.hughesengines.com for a good rework of the manifolds. One thing to keep in mind, if you modify the manifold...you'd better get a better (modified) Throttle Body to help out with the new-found airflow. (Also, the modified Intakes change the powerband to the higher RPM's and you will loose some bottom end.)

By only cutting 1.5" from the plenum divider (and the rest of the alterations), I gained about 12HP from this and didn't loose any noticeable bottom end performance. From 2500rpm on up, it pulls much harder as well.

Thanks for the detailed info. I have 2 sons and they both have Dakotas also('98 Sport w/5.2 standard & 3.90 posi and '99 R/T X-cab). We are doing different things to each one but I plan on computer, throttle body, & possibly cam changes soon on mine. Looking to get into the 14s and still be able to pull my 3000 lb. bass boat.

14's...that's easy. ;)

Just grab yourself a Flometrics 50mm Throttle Body and switch the gears out to 3.90:1. That'll put you in the upper 14's. (If you want to get lower 14's..as in 14.0 - 14.3, you'll need some extra help...something in the lines of a Powerdyne Supercharger.)

The supercharger will help you out on performance, towing (yes, you can use a S/C while towing), and possibly even into the high 13's.

Bernd,
My son with the R/T is a mechanical engineer. He has an idea about filling in some of the void in the intake to decrease volume. This should decrease response time on our naturally aspirated engines. It may also increase top end power. He is using info/specs from our LT1 and LS1 engine intakes to back up his figures. You seem know your engines. What is your ideas on such pie in the sky ideas?

Hi Bernd when you took your intake to get work done is there any specifics on what you tell the machinist. I have never had this type of work done before. will the machinist basically give choices on what I want done, and just go from there?

I just told him to mill the plenum divider 1.5" (no more - no less). He did it.

On filling the plenum, yes...you can do that but check out http://www.hughesengines.com first to see what they did. Also, you can contact Jon Smith who has done something like that already to his 5.2L manifold (http://www.fast4x4.net).

Key thing to remember...what works on one brand of vehicle doesn't always work another. (This may not be one of those cases though.)

Bernd, I didn't see anything on fast4X4 where he had filled the plenum area with anything. Our idea would decrease the plenum area to that of a MPI but would keep the runner length (minus 1.5 inches of course).

What are some of the best intake manifolds for a 1992 Dodge Dakota with the 5.2L V8? I've heard the M1 is great. Are they're any others? I need something with BIG hp/torque.
