I have a 2001 QC 4.7. I always used 87 in it. One day I got gas from a different station and it started to knock(87 octane). So I went to Amoco (normal station) and put in 89 to raise octane a bit and flush out the old gas. So after a tank full I started to use 87 from Amoco again. Knock was gone for a while. Now the knock is back and Ive been using 89 for 2 weeks now. Whats the deal??? It knock under hard throtle.

For starters, don't do any more hard throttle until you have this fixed. This is pre-ignition and it can put holes thru the top of your pistons.
Check the owners manual, does it say 87 is o.k.? The gas station owner will not admit to having poor gas, if that was the cause. It should still be under warranty unless you have a lot of miles.
Could be the computer isn't setting the timing right, over advanced timing is another cause, even with really good gas.

The problem is neither poor octane nor timing..
I also own the Dakota QC 4.7 4x4 and was having the same problem..I always used 90-92 Octane here in New Mexico..After taking it to Dodge they replaced the Timing Chain tensioner, Fan Clutch, Reprogrammed the Eeprom on Computer and still the same knock. I am now having them replace the entire engine!! It only had 8-12k miles on it when it began knocking..You might check into it through warranty. Right now I am pursuing it under Local Lemon Law and Arbitration.
