Subject: modified stock TB today, have Q IP: Logged
Message: I modified my stock TB today by cutting the air horns off with a hacksaw, then enlarged the upper portion of the opening with a dremel sanding drum, smoothed it with 600 grit wet/dry sandpaper and finished with steel wool. The finish is pretty good and it drives great. Here are my questions:
1 - how do I get the super smooth finish similiar to a Hughes or QuickD TB? It is smooth to the touch but you can see small scratches.
2 - this is not exactly a Hughes stage II or QuickD but I used the QuickD as the model, is it reasonable to expect 10 hp at the rear wheel. The Hughes Stage 1 (which has airhorns) flows 15% better, I am expecting at least the same since I removed the air horns. Obvously, since I did not enlarge the whole chamber, it won't be staggering but it only cost me 3 hours and a can of Carb/Choke cleaner.

(1) Some steel wool and a Green Scotch-Brite Pad
(2) The Hughes TB's also have enlarged bores and the linearization step is partially if not totally removed. This is where they get their flow from...not the top. (But cleaning up the top does help though.)
Make sure you clean out the shaft bearing/bushings as much as you can and lube with with a synthetic lubricant...not just WD-40 or Sewing Machine oil. If you didn't remove the blades and shaft to do this, you will have metal shavings in the bearings/bushings. Clean it out with carb cleaner and some compressed air.

Message: If possible, could you post some pictures of your homegrown modifications? I like the cheap and effective idea.
Also, if I were to install a Hughes, stage 1 or 2 TB, should I expect lean condition with a stock motor/PCM or will the stock EFI be able to compensate? I would also like to thank someone for posting the Hughes web page......looks like I found a place to spend some big $!!!!

I didn't pull the shaft out but hosed it down very good with carb and choke cleaner, also pulled the idle control valve and cleaned that, it was really gunked up.
What about the powergains?

Pictures of the "Home Modified" TB (It's been hand finished since the pictures though...the TB without the airhat blocks is a Magnum Performance SB-250 that I own.)

On the lean condition question, the PCM compensates for that with the O2, MAP, and static tables.

Message: On the lean condition question, I was worried about adding that much more air...upto 45%, and not having enough fuel. On my old cobra, I actually got to the point of having too much air and had to upsize fuel delivery and when the SHM camshafts went in, I was hurting for fuel. Luckily, I played with a larger fuel pump and more pressure with the stock injectors and lived.
Anyway, on the hughes site, I am looking at a Ram with 278hp at the rear wheels which has the camshaft, roller rockers, heads and TB. Total, 330hp or about at the crank? this is about 30% more power than the stock 245hp in the 5.9L. Surely he has had to do something for getting more fuel in. I would hate to spend all that money and learn I have to find/fab a new pump and add larger injectors. the reason I am asking the questions is because if I do this, I am going to do it all at once. With experience on Mustangs, it seems if you spread costs over time, certain things become obsolete or don't work with the latest speed parts of the day. I guess with a relatively limited offering of speed parts for the magnum engines, that should not be a problem. My other alternative is the blower but I also want to make wise decisions with parts so they will work with the blower later.
Gosh, decisions and more decisions!!!!!

With the Mass Air Systems, you just changed out the injectors and had your MAF recalibrated. (Same thing today as well on the Mass Air Systems...god I love those.)
As for the RAM, it looks rather impressive. The factory fuel system can handle quite a but but the strange thing on their mods list doesn't show any modified TB (which is ok) or how they're delivering the fuel (might be ok as well). I'd send them an email and ask them about it.
With the blower though, you will need a fuel enrichment system though (FMU, extra Injector, or larger injectors with the FMU). All depends on the boost that you run. 6# boost and the stock injectors work. 9# boost and they lean out on top end (replaced with 24# injectors and the fuel delivery is near perfect again). 10# boost and the 24# injectors are required.
On the '00 R/T's, 24# injectors come factory...unlike the 98/99 models (19#). Ya think Dodge knew something? ;)
